I've a 99 7.3PSD. I was told I had an exhaust leak. It can be heard inside the cab on passenger side. I looked at the exhaust manifolds and do not see any signs of leakage there. I have heard of these up pipes and that the donuts need to be changed to stop exhaust leaks? What are the up pipes, where are they located and how does on take them off? Is there a thread here at FTE?
Thanks
on the passenger side..in front of the front tire..just above the frame rail on the manifold you will see a steel line (looks like a brake line) it go's up to a sensor at the front of the motor..this is a back pressure sensor..check that steel tube close..they are noted to split and leak..I am sure that is your problem..

if that tube is not leeking.the pic below is looking at the rear.(where the trans hooks up) the up pipes are 8 and 3...look for black soot...that be a sighn of leaking
is the only way to check if your up pipes are leaking is by taking out your turbo or is there any other way thanks!
Crawl under and look closely at your manifolds and at the rear you will see a pipe about 1 1/2 " in dia. from each manifold and they go into a collector at the back of the turbo. If you see any black soot on the pipes where they go into the collector, they are leaking. Driver side is easy to see, the pass. side you have to look around the down pipe.
I took this picture of the up-pipes on an E450 that I installed the bellowed pipes on.
See the blackend area right below the Y-pipe? That is where they all leak.
Sorry no pictures of the bellowed pipes, but if you are needing to do this job it's very well worth the extra expense of the bellowed pipes. Once those are installed you'll never have to do that job again.
After I replaced the glow plugs. I checked the up pipes and sure enough the right side shows signs of leakage. I am unable to remove the transmission. Don't have the space or trans jack. Once the turbo/pedestal is removed is the right side pretty easy to change out? Since the right side is leaking would that be why the cab smells of burnt diesel when I let the engine warm up in the winter time? Thanks for all your replies. You guys rock!
Judging from Kris' picture it will be an easy task. The right lower connection is the one that would be the hardest IMO because the downpipe will be in the way.
I did mine with the turbo out, pedestal out, and the downpipe out. It was a rather simple task aside from the short throw on the 10mm wrench to tighten up the four bolts at the top. With the bellows you loosely hang the pipes ontop of the manifold and then you tighten up the bolts at the collector and then the turbo, then tighten the bolts at the manifold :0

I did mine exactly this way as well. A 10mm Stubby racheting wrench would have made the job somewhat easier I believe. If you can't get that, even a regular 10mm Stubby is priceless for this job, I found out. Gave me a reason to pick up a set....
