I have a '95 F-250 7.3L PS with a K&N Air Filter, 240k miles, just changed the oil and put in a new feul filter to try and address this problem.
In general, the truck is running fine. But heading down the highway it will suddenly, and temporarily, lose all power for just a split second, then catch and keep running again. It takes less than a second, and basically just gives me a big jolt when I'm heading down the road. Then last night, as I was idling and pulling a hard right into a parking spot, the engine quit. Restarted fine.
It's literally like the engine just turns off for 0.5 seconds and then kicks in again like nothing happened. I've searched the forums but can't find anything that appears related. Any ideas?
well i know a lot of people say this when a psd is shutting off and sometimes they are right and sometimes it is bigger than this, but i would try a new cps since they are only like $25 now just to make sure that is not the problem. and if it isn't the problem at least you'll have a spare for when it does go out.
Welcome to FTE, you'll get the answers you need here. You have described the CPS (Cam Position Sensor)that is very common. Do search for CPS and you'll find a wealth of info.
It's located on the front of the engine by the harmonic dampner, about 10 oclock. They are cheap at the ford dealer $20, be sure to tell them you want it for 97, not a 95 ot they will charge you $150. Get 2 and throw one in the glove box. You're lucky it is failing intermitantly, they can go dead at any time.
It's very easy to replace. All you need is a 10 MM socket and short extention. Check the wiring while you're there, look for corrosion or bent pins in the connector.

OK, I replaced one once already a few years ago, but that time the sucker just quit completely and left me on the side of the road - it wasn't intermittent so I ruled that out. Everyone says you should keep a spare - I guess I should learn.
You mentioned asking for a '97 model and not a '95 due to price, but my truck is a '95. Will they '97 work in my rig?
WHAT!!!! the cps for the '95's are 150 bucks!!! that is rediculus!!! i hope the ones for the '96 and '97's will work in mine because i really don't want to pay 150 smackaroo's just to replace something that's going to go out again sooner or later or may not even fix a problem. do you know if they will work in the '95's Jim?
My cps failed the same way 2 years ago. It was cutting out momentarily once in a while on the hiway and then one day it failed IN the DRIVEWAY!! Pretty convenient place to quit IMHO. Cost me almost $200 back then. The cps for a 96 now costs $150 or so. All the gurus on here confirm that a cps for a 97 and up will work on 95s and 96s. Get one for a 97 and definitely keep a spare on board.
