so i was driving home the other day and hit a bump and it broke my exhaust pipe right after the y pipe, so right now i got no muffler and no pipes, it comes right off the y pipe and empties out...honestly its not as loud as i thought a no mufflered 5.4 would be. It was a great sound, a little whispy, and it does get pretty loud when you step on it, when its just idling you can barely hear it, but in first gear just cruising around it has a real nice growl to it...i just thought id let everyone know that an uncorked, but still cat'ed 5.4 sounds real good, not too loud, but certainly loud enough!!!
Well, the dual cat designs Ford uses certainly do a good job of toning down the sound. I had a broken flex on my vehicle and it was right behind the cats and it would get very loud.
bla1879: I discovered how great a cat only was when I was installing my 3.5" exhaust. I was prepared to put the 3.5" on with a 3.5" muffler.
I got the stock exhaust off and it took longer than expected and I decided to call it a night. After driving it home from my friends house with only the cat, I realized that it wasnt as loud as I thought it would be, so I just installed the 3.5" pipe without the muffler.
As you described, loud, but not too loud. Very nice rumble and amazingly quite(especially at idle) considering no muffler.
i was really amazed at how quiet it was at idle, and people say that you lose the low end when you run like that, but, it feels the same to me, i didnt notice any power loss at all
