Having some issues with my 1997 F150 4.6L V8 4x4. Noticed that over the last few starts the starts sounded weaker and weaker. Now tonight it wont start. Took the battery down to the local car store and had it tested. It tested ok but they gave me a new one anyway. So I got the new battery home and the truck still wont start. When I turn the key there is a click like there is power going to the ignition but nothing happens. All the lights work ok and the headlamps are bright.
Does this sound like it could be an issue with the ignition? My dad also vaguely remembered having the same problem log ago and it was related to a solenoid
You are on the right track and the problem is not the ignition. If you can jump the solenoid and it doesn't start it's the starter. If in doubt you can take either of them in to a parts store and have them tested. Since it got weaker and weaker I'm betting on starter. Also make sure your battery cables are good and not corroded.
The best thing to try first is to observe the headlights while you try to start it.If they dim down some you may have a problem with yhe starter. If they remain bright you have an open connection somewhere. My guess in this case would be a bad ground somewhere. Hope this helps.
