Has anyone had experience with a Mercury Capri? I'm looking at a 1991 model
that appears in the ad to be in decent shape. And not unlike myself... Cheap.
I had 2, a 73 and a 74, thier cool little cars, both of mine were 4 cylinders, the 72 was a manual and the 74 was an auto. The 74 had a 2.0 and would fly for an automatic, it was faster than the 72, I'm not sure what 4 banger the 72 had, it may have been a 2.0 as well, but it wasn't near as fast as the 74. Some had a v-6. They were built in Germany. I liked them, I wouldn't mind haveing them back just for kicks and giggles.
I didn't even notice he said 91, when I think of capri's, I think of the little german ones from the 70's, I forget about the 2 seat aussie ones or the mustang knockoffs from the 80's
From what I recall about them the quality of them was hit and miss, mostly miss. see them on the road once in a while, and a fair amount in local junkyards.
The little two seater convertible is not worth your time. I have worked on those quite a bit, and they have a lot of problems. All the electronics under the dash are very sensitive to moisture, and the top is poorly sealed. The last one I worked on needed a $180-something headlight control module-
The earlier German ones with the 2BBL v6 were great, and the rebadged Mustangs weren't bad, and looked a bit better than the same-year Mustangs.
The 80's capri RS would run, they came with the 5.0 like the stang. The aussie capri had the turbo option, but still nothing to brag about. There's a guy at the strip who runs a 74 german capri with a 302, he runs in the mid 11's, it looks good and is fast. Shame you couldn't buy a german capri with a v-8. The aussie ones seem to sell pretty cheap, something doesn't seem right with them, they don't even seem to carry collectors value.
