Wider Wheels

I have a 1970 F100 and would like to know it they are any stock 15 X 7 or 8" rims that will fit it. I'd like to put some 60 series tires on it.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark, Any of the factory Ford wheels mid 80s to mid 90s of that size will fit. I just took late 80s Ford wagon wheels off my 66.

1953/96 F100/150 wheels have the same bolt pattern circle: 5.50.

1969 thru 1996 E100/150 Econolines also have the same bolt pattern, and use the same wheels.

EXCEPTION: The wheels from 1980/83 F100's which have a 4.50 bolt pattern.

No. In fact...

F100/150 maximum factory wheel widths 1953/91

1953/56 = 15 x 5.5" (16" x 5.5 optional)

1961/72 = 15 x 5.5" (16" x 5.5 optional)

1973/79 = 15" x 5.5" or 15" x 6" standard painted wheel; 15" x 8" 1978/79 styled steel wheel.
1980/83 F100 = 15" x 4.50"

1980/91 = 15" x 6" / 15" x 7" / 15" x 8"

No parts catalogs after 1991.

Go back and read his question, he wanted to know if 7 1/2" or 8" wide wheels would fit his truck, not what the bolt spacing was.

Very good question, I was wondering the same thing. You have to watch your hub offset. If you go to deep it will get in to the frame in back. Some times you can go to a tire/wheel shop and they can help fit. You will have more problem with the front hitting when you go lock-to-lock. So you may have to keep the smaller wheels in front. As to actual size, I think the 8" will fit the back, but not the front.

What you'all are saying is that ANY factory ford wheel with 5.5 spacing from
80 to 91 will fit? Best may be 15 X 7 on front, 15 X 8 on rear? I'll be going to a salvage yard to find them.

Thanks
Mark

On wheel sets you have 3 numbers. 1 is tire size, 13" ,14" ,15" , 16" ....
Then you have lug spacing 5.5", 6". This is measured from center to center of 2 holes while skipping 1 hole.

Then there is offset. Offset is the amount the wheel lug is from center. So + 1" means it sticks out 1" meaning on a 8" rim you will have 3" on one side and 5" on the other side. May be wrong on which way the + and - readings shift the hub.

So on the rear you could shift the wheel out further and not get into the finder, frame or leaf springs. Call a tire or wheel store they have a book telling them what will fit.

So make sure you check offsets.

I think there is a minumn clearance of 1" due to tire movement.

Gentlemen, I have run the silver wagon wheels on my 66, that came on 86-early 90s F series and Broncos. I have seen our series trucks with both the alum & chrome Ford wheels from early 90s to 96 when the bolt pattern changed. I doubt you would have any issues with either 7.5 or 8" unless they were very offset. I checked the galleries and found this link https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...?albumid=28705 to show the wheels that I ran. 2wd & 4wd are the same.

I ran factory wagon wheels from my 91 on my 67. No issues.

Edit: They were 15x8's and 275/60/15 BFG's.

!

I didn't list the bolt spacing anywhere, except on 1980/83 F100's.

So, I answered the question YOU asked me.

YOU asked me this question in Post # 4. "How wide were the 1953 wheels?"

I answered you by typing the widest wheel widths available the Ford truck parts catalogs list by models.

FORD PARTS CATALOGS: The wheels are listed like this: 15 x 5.5 x 5.50 bolt circle. Or 15 x 6 x 5.50 bolt circle. Or 15 x 8 x 5.50 bolt circle.

I thought I typed the info clearly.

So the wheels are 15 inches in diameter, and 5.5" wide, or 6 or 8.

I left off the bolt circles in my original post (exc 1980/83 F100, and you will notice I typed 4.50 for the bolt circle, NOT 4.5).

Where I typed 5.5 = that means the width of the wheel...NOT the bolt circle.

The bolt circle is ALWAYS LISTED AT 5.50 (or whatever, depending on model).

Next time I'll be clearer and type 5 1/2" wide instead of 5.5."

my experience has been that the back tires hit the bottom of the bed right above the frame and pop before getting a chance at the frame, there's leaf springs between the tires and the frame.
