have any of you looked at or used the 532 stroker kits?
i've built a pretty good street class diesel pulling truck now im thinking about just an all out puller with one of these kits in it.
what kind of machine work am i looking at?
just built a 347 to put in my 91 mustang and it was a small pain to get it notched and find rods for it. just looking at my options.
Hello, I am having a 557ci Stroker engine put together and one thing I have learnt from these forums with the stroker kits for the big Fords is that the only machine work needed on the big strokers is on the bore to match the piston size, e-g 030 or 080 as in my case, there is no machine work needed to clear conrods or rotating parts as far as I know... hope this is of some help !
532 is a drop in for any of the 429/460 blocks, but I would have your block sonic tested to make sure it will go .080 safely, usually there is one cylinder that will end up being a little on the thin side and might want to sleeve that one (my block at .060 had one cylinder that had a non thrust wall at .095 thick at .080 would have only been .085 for an example) if your block is standard you might want to consider going .030 overbore for a 521cid but what ever you do anything over .060 overbore I really recommend a sonic test. Next just for piston stability I recommend finding a D9TE block as the cylinder walls are approx 3/16" longer so hold the piston at BDC better.
As Jamie stated the only thing you HAVE to do is bore it to the proper size, I also say line hone (good idea on any performance build if you are stroking or not) and square decking the block and possibly bringing it to zero deck for better quench.
that helps a whole lot
i had the engine bored .30 over to fit the pistons that came in the kit. but we had no clue with the crank just wanted to make sure before i started digging in to hard.
just need to get the deck zeroed to these pistons heads are in the machine now to get 2.30 intake valves shoved in them. exhaust valves should be in tomorrow. just went with the crower double springs. cam is a CRO-22401 out of summit, LUN-72411LUN lifters. undecided on my rocker arms? any common holdup info is appreciated. hoping to keep it in the 4000-7000 rpm range. bless the little 79 f-250 this is going in. hahahaha.
Hello Monsterbaby, As I Have the 557ci Scat Kit My bore size has to go out to 080, my bore now is at 040. You mention that one of my bores might have to be sleeved could you tell me which one so that I can let the machine shop know so that we can keep a eye on that bore... Thanks Jamie.
Jamie it's no particular one, it just seems that when we did the block summit a couple years ago there was always one. We sonic tested 36 blocks in one day. (actually Dave McClain sonic tested them the rest of us watched, BS'd and ate some good food.
Here is a link to the website with the block info from that day. at the bottom you will see a couple different links to the page of sonic sheets from there. Mine is the 03.gif file (html link third one across the top if your interested ) as you can see my #8 cylinder had a non thrust wall that was .095
Hello monsterbaby, Funny thing I found that on the web last year and had a good read, I will go into those links to have a look, on that day I read that various 460ci blocks were tested for thickness with all being different, I guess it comes down to luck, on the good-side at least my block is a D9TE , I would of prefered to only go 030 over in the bore but my bore size is already at 040 so that was why I went with the 557ci kit... what do you think of the big Lunati Roller cam I have decided to put in it to bump up horse-power into the 700 mark, Thanks Jamie. Australia.
im still surprised at the expense of this thing seems like i can make insane horsepower and torque for 1/4 the price of my diesel truck. not to mention i can get some decent rpms for 1/4 the price. when i built my 347 i ended up spending about 4800 from oil pan to heads this was a moderate build 489hp/407 torque. seems like i can build this 532 for the same price while doubling the hp. i can figure out why i even fooled with a small block even if its in a car. goota love the little cummins though it does pull good but i've just pushed it a little past the streetable mark. reason for this gas beast.
