Swap anything?

Well my 73 429 didn't hold out in my 79 pickup. Everything was good when I put the bearings etc in about 2k miles ago but now their trashed.... long story...
I've got access to a 460 from a 85 ford ambulance. The 460 has a alumiumn intake and newer holley carb, the 429 has a new performer 460 intake and carter 625. I put a straight up timing set for a 68 is it worth pulling off the 429 and putting it on the 460? or just leave the 460 as is and drop it in?
Thanks

definetly change the timing set. adds at least 20hp to these later engines. very easy to do once you have the engines out anyways.

depending on what type of intake the 460 has, i would swap out the performer also. quite nice intakes all around.

as for carbs, that is a personell choice. some peopel like Holleys, some like the Edelbrock/Carter carbs. both are fairly easy to tune on and have lots of aftermarket support. guess depends on size of Holley also. if it is the factory Ford one, then i would say change it for the Carter as the Holley was re-designed for emissions and isn't as tuneable as a regular Holley due to circiut changes.

If your Holley has dual fuel inlets keep it, if not, eBay it! Everything else sounds like a keeper and should be a direct replacement.
The last 429 I tore apart had almost 150000 miles on it, and suprisingly, almost everything inside it could have been reused if necessary.

Thats what's really torquing me about the 429, I have a feeling someone at the shop ran it w/out oil when they were putting on the exhaust and fixing the timing cover leak... but who knows...... All the old parts I pulled out showed no wear.....
I like the idea of an extra 20 hp, just set it straight up? or would it be best to advance or retard a bit? I don't remeber off the top of my head but i think it has marks for 4*. I belive the holley is the factory ford, only it was replaced a few years ago. Hard thing to find (or so the shop said) something about extra hoses etc......

just set the chain straight up unless you want to go to the trouble of actually dialling in your cam. extra work for very minor gains.

swap carbs if that is the case. the Carter will be a better performing carb and easier to dial in properly than the factory Holley carb.

good luck with changes
