I am going to succumb to the new truck smell and swap my 2000 F250 CC 4x4 V10 3:73 Auto for the same, only a 2003. My question is concerning the V10. I looked underneath and noticed the necked down y pipe that I have been reading about. My 2000 doesn't have this. I understand that they did it to supposedly fix the flutter problem but it looks like to me it would kill the mileage. I don't know if my 2000 ever has fluttered, it gets 13,5 mpg combined (according to the little counter)which I feel is decent. I drove the 03 and it seemed to be much smoother and quieter, and the feel of the power seemed the same. My 2000 always seemed to have some weird vibration or noise that got transmitted into the cab, and the engine seemed to moan more than it should on just normal acceleration. It has 55,000 and has done it since new, Ford naturally always said it was normal. Have the 03's been improved on and is the economy still the same?
My 02, V-10 equipped SD had a bit of a "moan" between 1800 and 2200rpm.under load.It lessened quite a bit after a few thousand break in miles. That's all history now that I replaced the whole system with a Banks Power Pack system.
As far as economy goes it returned 13mpg in mixed driving with a best of just over 14mpg in the same type driving.I was nursing it to get the 14+mpg.It pretty much gets the same fuel mileage with my mods.,maybe a bit more.
The 03 theoretically should feel a bit more powerful once broken in than your current V-10.They upped the hp.since yours, but I wouldn't be suprised if some may be lost to the newer "skinny" y-pipe.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-02 AT 04:51 PM (EST)]Okay, I'm due to pick up the new V10 in a couple of hours. Funny how fast they can get them out the door now days. Here is the 03 equipement V10 w/badges, auto, 4x4, 3:73LS (would have preferred 4:30),Lariat, chrome side steps, FX4 (hope the stickers come off easy), rear backup detectors, fog lamps, 6 disk CD, captains chairs seating, trailer towing, anything else I'll have to read the window sticker again. The best part was the price - $300.00 over invoice. If I can figure out how to work it, I'll post a picture tomorrow. Oh, it's dark shadow grey with grey leather.
Thanks all and the truck is great! I'm really surprised at the difference in the quietness and the smoothness of the 03 V10 compared to the 2000. It's hard to tell if the 2000 that did not have the necked down Y pipe had anymore power than this one, as it is so tight. The truck had 31 miles on it and was full of gas when I picked it up. Now after coming into work it has 165 miles and the mpg readout, which I reset when I picked it up, says 13.7. The old one was reading 13.5 when I dropped it off, so even though I haven't gotten down on the pedal like the old one I am glad to see that economy evidently won't be too different from the 2000.
And it is interesting that during the process of buying and delivery there were many comments made from the salesman and the head of the service department that more and more people are buying the V10 over the diesel because of the illusion that the diesel will save you a ton of money in the long run, plus they aren't near as fun to drive. I test drove a PS in the same configuration and was not at all impressed. Previous to 96 I had always driven 460s and in 96 I tried a PS and after driving it 40,000 miles I traded it back for a 97 460 which I still keep as a work truck (180,000 miles young). My 97 460 would outpull my 96 PS all day long and only get 4 mpg less. But the 03 PS that I test drove seemed twice as noisy as my 96 and had an strong vibration while at idle. Anyway to each his own I suppose.
All that said, the V10 is the only way to fly! Now I just have to figure out how to post the picture.
