Get the V-10, or you won't be cool like us guys (and gals) here are. Pretty simple when you look at it in that light huh ? Besides that, I've had the PSD, I've had the IDI non-turbo diesel and I've had the 6.9 Navistar that I installed an ATS turbo on. I've also had the 460, the 351, the 302 and the venerable 300 six. Along with just about every other make and model and displacement engine and configuration ever made. And my FAVORITE stock motor of all is the V-10. I just love driving a 5800 pound truck that smokes the punks in their rice-burners out of the lights. There's power everywhere in the rpm range, and it gets 12-14 mpg. Ken

Sorry, but I have to disagree with Ken and Lisa - Yes I do have a V10 and I like it - but I do wish I would've spent the extra $$$ and gotton the PSD - I drive to work about 5 miles each way every day and, of course, just driving around (as my SuperDuty is so nice to drive anyhow) - I pull a large 22' boat in the summer, a very large snowmobile trailer in the winter and 28' RV whenever. I'd rather have the PSD as you get more power and much better mileage - I'm lucky to get 8-9 MPG when truckin along at 65 with anything behind me and I've actually power'd out pulling the RV up hill - had to drop to 2nd and could only hold 60 mph...
Got a friend who has a brand new PSD crewcab LB 4x4 - and pulling his 27' RV he still gets 14 MPG!!! twice what I got on my last pull - that more than makes up for the the extra cost of oil changes... and diesel and gas here are the same price....
of course, IMHO

My V10 gets 16 on the hwy and 9.6 towing(27' 5th wheel), the oil changes alone will kill you with the PSD plus the 5 grand up front is a lot of gas to burn.
The biggest dif I find is when I drive around town. the PSD got 17.5 the V10 12 if I drive carefull.

I'm spending alot of money on this truck, and don't want to get something that I will regret or not need.

Boy, I hear stories like this all the time, and I sure wish they were true in my case, but that surely isn't the mileage I got with any of my diesels, except the 350 SDL Benz I had. And I've had every model of that cornbinder diesel. Maybe it's just me cause I hear lots of guys boast about like 20 MPG in the PSD's. The two guys here on the trading floor have 2001 and 2002 PSD's in their 1 ton crewcabs, and they get around 14. I hear LOTS of guys say "my friend gets 20+ in his Powerstroke diesel. But I NEVER heard anyone say "I got 20+ in MY Power Stroke diesel" It's ALWAYS the 'other guy'. Kinda like "GEEZ the fishing WAS awesome, you SHOULD HAVE been here yesterday". The 5K it costs to check the PSD option will pay for LOTS of gasoline, along with the tab to change 16 quarts of oil. And buying 2 batteries every couple of years, and replacing sagging front springs that have collapsed from the weight of the motor. No thank you, Gimme a V ! Now gimme a 10, WHAT'S THAT SPELL ??? Yea, you got it mister V-10 !!!!

My mileage is as follows:
Highway (70 MPH) empty: 13.5
Combined Average (daily driving): 11.5
In Town: 9-10
Towing my 28' travel trailer: 7-9... depends on hills & wind
Note that I said long box... The long box gives me 9 extra gallons which comes in handy when I am tugging my camper.
TOWING: Would the PSD come in handy while towing in the hills? I think it would. My V-10 has bogged down to 35-40 MPH on some hills with my camper. PSD boys all claim their motor tow like a dream and they would never go back to a gasser.
IT IS CHEAPER TO OPERATE A DIESEL: When I did the math on the better mileage of the PSD, the higher purchase price, the higher maintenance costs for the PSD, and the higher cost of diesel fuel around here (.08 cents per gallon more than gas), I would be near 120,000 miles before I would break even. I average 12,000 miles a year so that would take me 10 years. It would not be cheaper for me to operate a diesel.
I see only 2 reasons to pick a PSD over the V-10: 1) you tow big trailers and you put a lot of miles on your truck doing it. 2) You really like the sounds and smells of an oil burning motor!

10,000 pounds of trailer is still, and always will be 10,000 pounds of trailer. My PSD's towed great, so does my V-10. Honestly I'd rather have the V-10 pulling a big load up a hill. The diesels develp their peak torque @1800 rpm, but the tranny kicks down way before that if you're standing on the throttle so what good is it ? I've got $10 that says my V-10 will tow a 10,000 pund up a 6% grade faster than a comparably equipped PSD up the same hill with the same trailer.

Nor would it be cheaper for anyone else I would guess. Sure your engine may last 300,000+ miles but the injector pump, the alternator(s), the water pump, the tie rods, the tranny, etc, etc, etc won't. What good is a diesel motor with great internals in a vehicle that's worn out ? The national avg for vehicle ownership is what ? 7 years or so ? Are most drivers going to have a 15 year old PSD when the new Super-Duper 4WD, 4 wheel steer, 2 liter, 600 HP, convert-a-cab (pick-up, station wagon, van, SUV, convertible, etc, etc, all-in-one) 35 mpg, Motor Trend car/truck of the year is out and for sale ? Probably not, most of us don't. So why pay an extra $6 grand when we'll never, ever see the benefits of it ?

It would have to be LOTS and LOTS of towing miles, and even then it would be close. Personally I like the sound of diesels, always have. That's why I have had lots of them, but bottom line is their are many more advantages to the V-10. If ya like the diesels and can afford it just for the sound and wanting to pretend you're a big rig, go for it. I LOVE the sound of a big inch American gas motor at full song, there's nothing like it anywhere.

Ken! I didn't realize you were a Ford insider! "2 liter, 600 HP" What kinda torque are we talking? I can't wait.
