Is there a difference between Auto and Lock for the Hubs on the front axel of 4x4 Super Duties?
The lock feature allows you to manually lock the hubs if preferred. When using the Pulse Vacuum Hublock...auto...all front drive line components are disconnected...minimizing wear...and modestly improving fuel economy when in 2WD.
Plus you get the advantage of knowing that 4 wheel drive is locked in, and you won't have to worry about it possibly coming out of 4 wheel drive.
Also, you know that they are UNLOCKED when you unlock the manual hubs. Almost equally as important to keep from burning up front axle u joints at high speeds. My last u joint busted right after getting home from doing 75mph with the hubs locked. Typically not an issue, but it was a factory joint with no zert fitting.
Sorry for nitpicking, but you have an axle on the front of your truck, not an axel. Axel was the lead cop in the Beverly Hills Cop movies, played by Eddie Murphy.
Your hubs have an AUTO position and a LOCK position. Use the LOCK position when the hubs fail to engage automatically. Eventually they will, these hubs suck.
If you have not used 4 wheel drive in a while it also wouldn't hurt to put the hubs in LOCK every month or so and drive 10 miles, just to get everything rotating and lubricated. Just leave the switch in 2 wheel drive so you don't hurt the transfer case.
