Good and Bad Years???

Looking to buy and need to get some idea which years to look at or avoid. I am looking to get a diesel. My last was an F250, 7.3 and I liked it. Now looking at an 04 X with the 6.0. Any info would be great.

why not get an 03 or earlyier with the 7.3 and be happy, if you get one with the 6.0 do a very good history report on that vehicle. 6.0 have more troubles than the 7.3

My buddy had an 03 6.0 and had nothing but problems, is that likely to be just that one motor or was it widespread? Are the later years better?

A 2005 X built after 1/31/05 will have a MY 2005 engine and will have the more reliable engine.

[Find a 2003 with a 7.3 motor, YOU WILL be glad you did! THe 7.3 was pretty bulletproof compared to the 6.0 motor! I have a 04 6.0 Ex, I love the thing but man it breaks down a lot.

I could always save 10K and buy the V10! Wonder how long it would take in gas fees to make up the difference?

We bought the v-10 after my wife figured it would take us 70,000 miles to break even.We get 16.3 on the high way at 65mph with the 4.30 gears,,we got 10.2 over 1000 miles on i-80 pulling our 7000 lb airstream...thats good enought for us...we have a 2000 v-10 4x4 with 78000 miles.

go for the '05...I love mine and its been good to me so far w/ almost 37k miles and my buddy has a '06 SD w/46k miles. all either one of use have done is change the oil & filter and the fuel filter regularly and neither one has been to the dealer once, so far so good!

I was never satisfied with my 7.3 but would never buy a 6.0. If you want the perfect match, buy the cheapest V-10 you can and put a better engine in it. I'd go with nothing but a P-pumped Cummins. If you stick with a 7.3, make sure you get the forged rods. Later years had more optional electronics on the steering wheel but could have more electronics to fail in the future. I'm glad to see folks buying up used diesels.

Arno, when we are rolling along at a steady 65 and fillup, the meter reads 650 some miles to empty. my dw calculates it herself and finds the lie-o-meter is reading about 0.2 too high. When she and i drove 18 wheelers she did all the mileage keeping. At one point in our last trip we went about 600 and some miles. When I filled it up she took 40 gallons @ $ 3.40 a gal. so I new I was about empty.
