97 4.6 Overheating

I know there has been alot of this lately. I am sorry for asking again, but I'm stumped. My truck begins to overheat at 40 MPH. If I continue, it will go limp. If I back off it goes back down. It stays normal just under 40, but as soon as it get's over, up it goes. A coworker suggested that the water pump impeller might be slipping on the shaft, but I have no seeping. There seems to be no leaking at all. The AC doesn't seem to make much difference and turning on the heater doesn't seem to either. I thank you for any help!!

Matt

Well, the fan clutch seems to be working if it stays cool at lower speeds, so usually the culprit is a partially clogged radiator or one that has too much build-up on the tubes internally to transfer the heat out of the coolant. I just went thru this on a 97 Dodge, except he ended up cooking the engine. It was fine around town, stayed about 200, then on the highway it kept creeping up until the gauge pegged. After I replaced the engine, with a new water pump, it did the same thing until I replaced the radiator.
Perhaps a local radiator shop can boil it out and it will be ok.

Have you checked the coolant level. It sounds like steam is affecting the sending unit .
