i've got a '96 f-250 with 7.3L i was wondering if it would be realistic to get 400hp out of it for about 1 grand. i've got an exhaust and intake. and if not about how much can i get with that?
Before you start pumping out that much power, make sure you have a good set of gauges for monitoring your systems.
You'll want to make sure your tranny is up to handling that much power and torque. I don't have the mods to make that much power, so I'd wait for the ones who have done it to jump in here. You didn't mention what you have, but if it matters, I'm running an E4OD.
MAKING the power is easier than making sure the rest of the powertrain can HANDLE the power. I'm thinking you're going to want to upgrade the torque converter and valvebody, at a minimum.
Contact some of the tranny sponsors. Tell them what you want to do and ask some questions. No such thing as too much information.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Pictures and a write-up are always welcome.
Go to the "User CP" and "Edit Signature". Put in what vehicle you have and any mods you've made so far. That will help us determine what your next, best step might be. I think there is a limit of 300 characters for your signature.
It's difficult to know what to suggest if we don't know what you've done.
well i've looked all over that page and there is no edit signature. but i've got an aftermarket torque conver that was installed whenn the tranny was rebuilt. a 3" downpide that goes to a dual 4" exhaust and a k&n intake kit. i basically want to know what the best mods i can get for 1 grand
Theres a $1000 spent for ya'. I hope this helps.

i think with injectors and a chip you can hit 400HP or close to very easy! however it wont do you any good if you dont upgrade other areas of your truck as was stated. if you go with pre-built injectors that right there is $1000, then the chip for another $400-$500 thats $1500 doing the bare minimum to hit your target HP.
what you have to do is just modify one step at a time then forget how much you spent so that you feel better when you get to the next step thats what i have had to do!
yeah use step one as like... free flowing intake/exhaust (which is done already), gauges and finding any boost leaks/fuel leaks... step 2 as building up the powertrain (you almost finished that it seems).... step 3 is injectors, chip, and then it's endless after that
you won't be able to come close to 400hp with $1,000. but we can get you started. First of all check your air intake tubing to your turbo to make sure your K+N hasn't allowed a bunch of dirt into you engine. K+N's are not good choices when it comes to these trucks. If you find any dirt at all you need a new air filter system. I recommend a Tymar intake.
You already have exhuast done so your good there. Next before you add any power at the very least you should have a Pyrometer to measure exhuast gas temp so you don't burn down your engine, next best gauges is a tranny temp to keep your E4OD from dying an early hot death, then a Boost gauge is also good for tabs on turbo boost mainly to gauge your upgrades and to keep you turbo alive when you go with larger injectors.
Then since you want big power you might as well go to injectors first so you only need to have a chio burned once. I recommend the DIY injectors that were linked above. for less than $500 you can build your current injectors into stage 1's though if 400 hp is your target you will probably need stage 2's.
then get a chip from either tony wildman or DP Tuner. depending on what injectors you go with you will be in the 300-400 hp range but your tranny even with an aftermarket converter may not be very happy for long. I would also recommend a BTS valve body or a trans go shift kit for it.
Then your turbo will need some help also cause your going to be blowing alot of black smoke and high boost with will wipe out the thrust bearing of your stock turbo so you will need a Dominator 66 to last with stage 1's. if you go 2's you will want a different turbo.
So as you can see if you really want 400hp and allow your tranny and turbo to live you will need to have between $2-$4,000.
But with guages, DIY stage 1's and a good chip you can be close to 300-350 (for about $1000-1300) but your tranny and turbo still might suffer loss.
Tim hit it on the head. I just wish there was a cheaper turbo than the H2e for stage II's I will be down that path soon (hopefully) and I don't want to spend more on my turbo than I have done on everything else altogether.

so how many ponies can you squeeze out with stage-I's and a tony chip? i thought it was a lot closer than that
my bad, i was wrong yet again
glasseater..... i'll let you know how this dominator works out for me i cant friggin wait! not expecting a huge power difference, just wanna make sure i dont blow up a turbo and have it take out my engine
