Looking for anyoneone running a smallblock in these trucks. What do you like, what don't you? MPG, power. cruising etc. I have an fe and just trying to get an impression of how the sb's drive, thanks for any info, Matt.
I had a 302 '70 F100 years back. I put a 4bbl on it, Holley 600, toploader 4spd, 3.50 gears. If I recall back then it got 12-14 mpg, but I scrapped it in '96 so gas was cheaper and I never really paid attention to mileage then.
It ran well, I pulled open trailer with 4100 lb car on it all summer. Did fine, thought it was no speed demon. I think with a roller 302 you could get some real decent numbers with a T5 behind it.
It definitely handled better without all the FE hangin on the nose. Both of my trucks now are FE, so a swaybar is mandatory to keep the door handles from rubbing the pavement while going around corners.
They make them new from Addco. You should be able to order it up from Summit or the like. If you have a big block truck it makes a WORLD of difference. It really settles it down on the highway(swaying around), plus going around corners in town it really flattens it out. You don't get that "rolling over" feel.
Really simple to install, as the frame brackets use one existing hole in frame, then you just drill the other. The I-beam hole is really simple to drill with 3/8" drill. Bolt on the tab, install the links. Shouldn't take but an hour to have it all put on. You won't believe the difference it makes.
I bought my '67 about 5 yrs ago and I couldn't believe how bad it handles without a bar(my '69 has had one for 19 yrs). I quickly ordered one and it's now a dream to drive.
'72 w/302, edelbrock z85 intake, 600 holley vacuum secondaries, set the timing at 18 btdc and get a 3rd gear scratch every time and i never turn it past 4200 r's. if carbs tuned right. that's my experience anyway
Thanks for the replies. The 360's coming out of my 69, question is whether to build another fe or go with a smallblock, both have advantages just wanted to know what everyone who was running one thought, Matt.
Good engine. Mine is attached to a t-18 four speed. Good low end torque and decent mileage. I did burn the clutch working it hard to remove a tree stump.
