i think that you might be having problems with your evaporative emissions side of things on your truck. i am not sure what the gas leaking out could have been, but i know that there is a vent on the top of the tank and it has a valve that opens with increased pressure. Maybe it is dirty and plugged.
The odor could be coming from a bad charcoal canister, which i believe is located above your spare tire underneath. It is mounted to a bracket and it is kinda hard to identify, but it is a big boxy rectangular piece of plastic with lines going to it. This also has a vent on it that might be plugged, or it could have a leaking o-ring on an evaporative emissions line. If you can get it apart and inspect it, you might find your problem. i always coat my o-rings with a light coat of lithium grease when i take apart a fuel line. (Emphasis on the light)
Also, in front of your vehicle, on the driver's side above your fender liner, is a canister purge valve that could be bad or the wires that control it could be corroded. This will cause a fuel vapor odor sometimes and will also cause poor fuel economy and erratic idle along with overpressurization of the fuel tank which can be noted by a buzzing sound coming out of your fuel cap. i could be wrong, but this is my experience so far. i hope it is helpful.
