Does anyone know where to find a higher capacity oil pan? I tow a lot and want a little more oil to help reduce the heat load on the engine. Before you ask, it doesn't run hot now, I'm looking for a way to keep it that way.
Aftermarket parts are hard to find for the V-10. You can pick up a Summit or Jegs catalog and find parts for 302's and 351's all day long. The old "demand" part of the "supply and demand theory." When you do find V-10 parts they normally Expensive $$$$ I called a performance chip manfactuer and asked why the chips were so expensive for the V-10 as compared to the 5.4. His reply was simply low demand, so the chip has to be more expensive to recover the R&D cost.
You can have one made at a race shop. They will remove your oil pan and weld a larger bottom portion to it with cooling fins if so desired. It would cost a couple hundred bucks, I have a freind that works in a custom race shop and they do this once in a while. I plan to do this after the holidays. You can also add two large capacity oil filters, this will screw onto the bottom of the motor and use two long steel braided hoses that will go up two the engine compartment. This will be easy for service, say by the power steering, batteries or something. The hoses with the dual filters will hold an additional three or four quarts of the Texas tea, for extra cooling and longer engine life, as the oil won't get so dirty.
>are there any drawbacks to too much oil, like in too cool of
>a temp.??????????
Short answer is yes, won't burn off water/condensation.
Longer answer: The oil needs to get to an operating temp. that will evaporate condensation (esp. in winter) and to achive rated flow.
One reason why short trips that do not let the engine warm up are soooo harmful.
Now with that said, keep in mind that if you are already getting the truck up to operating temp. (and not overheating), adding a couple of filters and/or an external oil filter will NOT prevent the oil from getting to operating temp., this will just do a better job of keeping the oil from burning.

MAG-TECH makes oil and tranny pans. They are very expensive though. I doubt you will see improvements worth the $$$ you will dish out!

My '01 has an oil cooler. The two coolant hoses going to above the oil filter are the cooler. If you had a larger oil capacity, I wouldn't worry about the oil being too cold because that oil cooler works as both a cooler and a HEATER. If the coolant is at 185 degrees, the oil will be too because of the oil cooler. If the oil gets TOO hot it starts to shed heat into the coolant.
