i just had a failure in the drivetrain, where the driveshaft connects to the rear differential.
there is a sort of bracket bolted to the rear diff, which is what the u-joint is connected to. one side of this bracket (which holds one of the ujoint cups) broke off, so i will need a replacement.
i have the driveshaft removed, and new ujoints.
my questions are:
1) what is this bracket called (the piece that's bolted onto the rear diff that connects to the driveshaft)?
2) any idea if this will be a hard part to find? (so i can start planning alternate transportation if thats the case)
3) how to i get that bracket thing off? it has a different bolt, with 12 points on the head. can i get a socket for this at a hardware store, or is it a speciality tool?
i have a photo, but doesn't look like i can attach images in the post.
The piece that is attached to the end of the driveshaft via the u-joint is called a drive flange. To remove the drive flange, you will need a 12 point socket, which can be found at most hardware stores and I believe its 12mm as well. I would go and talk to a wrecker for the part, since it is going to be your cheapest option, or a drivetrain shop. A typical auto parts store most likely wont have what you are looking for.
i see you're from edmonton. i'm up in fort mcmurray so my choices of autowreckers might be nil as far as i know. i'll likely have to get it shipped from edmonton. is there a wrecker down there you'd recommend?
