Locked Tranny 95 f150

Hi, Just inherited a 1995 f150 2wd with a locked tranny. Shifter goes through the positions ok. Engine stalls when clutch is let out in any gear. Neutral ok. Manual Trans. Drive shaft is off. It was dark when I got it home tonight so not much else could be checked. Any thing I should look for special, or does it look bad for the tranny?

not much you can do without taking the tranny all apart to figure it out.

Try connecting the drive shaft back up, and get somebody to try to pull you, with the clutch mashed in, but in gear.

Do what dean said andlisten to what alxsnmr said.....might be some damn synchronizers or badly worn bearings which will mean you will have to take it apart.....what Dean said is to test that theory.....

Thanks guys, It'll be a couple of days before I can get back to it. I did notice that the output shaft end looks off centered alot, but I won't be able to tell until I get back to it. I'm sure I'll be back. Until then it's just me and my 74

take 10-20 mins to put shafts back in start in N put in clutch and see what happens.

I predict a "wanted" ad on your neighborhood craiglist with the word transmission in it in your future...I got mine for 80...good luck, may want to do clutch at same time.

Okay, It's really been a rough weekend. I just went back over my original post and see where I need typing lessons. It's a 85 f150 300 motor 4spd. I put the driveshaft back in and it appears to be stuck in 1st. clutch in and it's normal. you can move the shifter through the gears(it won't go all the way into 1st) but as soon as you let off on the clutch it stalls the motor. Maybe a fork has come off? I don't know much about trannys(rebuilding) and I'm not sure I want to really try. Might just replace if I can find something reasonable.

Well, 4 spds are very expensive at junkyards, and if you have a T18 or a T19 (I don't know anything about the NP 235) you can get one for about $200 bucks, and they are usually very dependable. Parts are also very cheap, since the they were used from the late 60s all the way to the late 80's in Ford trucks, Jeeps, and Internationals. Some of the case's are slightly different, but all of the internals are the same(except for 1st gear ratio's but they are interchangable). The T18 and T19 are also very simple tranny's to disassemble and work on, so even if you are completely inexperienced, I believe you can rebuild yours. (I know I was able to rebuild one, and the only other tranny I had dissassembled was the one on my racing mower). If you don't have a T18 or T19, then I can't be much help.

I might just have to give it a try. I think it's a t18 but I'm not sure. That's the bad thing about buying a multi owner vehicle. You don't know whats been done to it, or whats been put in it. There was a haynes manual(well used) under the seat and it has a copied exploded view of a t18 in it with the speedometer drive gear highlighted. That, along with the rear housing on the tranny is missing some bolts and the bottom bolt was backed out(that's why the shaft looked offcentered), I think someone's been into it. So it's no telling what I'll find.

Is sounds like someone took off the shifter and may not have put it back in right.

This happened to me when i pulled my mazda 5speed. it was stuck in first but still felt like it could shift. But i dont know why it would stall.

it kinda sounds like what might be happening, but it might be something internal. Im not sure. Its something to look into.

Hope you get it figured out.

it will say t-18 right on it it will say t-98 if its a really early t-18
the shift forks aren't your problem, the busted synchro gear inside the tranny is the problem.

My truck if you search my post history my first post was on this very subject. Put an ad saying I NEED A T18 on CL and got hooked up with a crusty ol ford guy (the best kind) and 80 bucks later I had my tranny.

You can do it!!!
don't worry too much about what was done, it probably stopped soon after it began.

the total rebuild kit is 120 so save that old core and when you have time you can build it and have a fresh unit waiting for you.

let us know how it works.

Thanks, sounds like a good plan. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all the input. I'm an old tech, been along time since I was in the field. It's good to have a collective brain to pick.

ok
well since we all know tranny needs replaced or rebuilt(you can peek inside drain hole and stick a magnet in there and see if you catch any big ones lol but I know you have at least one busted synchro causing the shift collar not be able to move.

so what I would do is this...don't reattach your DS like I said before, take them both out (or one if 2wd), support trans, remove crossmemember and tc support if 4x4, then remove trans bolts, make sure stick shift is disconected, and drop trans, then you can disassemble on bench, but you should identify model asap so you can start looking.

I wish I had a 95 stuck in gear, its gonna be an easy fix. also, determine why it seized likely no gear oil, important to keep on top of that stuff.
