i have a 1989 f250 5.8. i've been having some stalling at idle and cutouts while driving. the engine light does'nt work. i tryed pulling codes but i'm not getting anything. i know i should have some codes because i've had the iac the tps and egr sensor disconnected. the tps and egr sensor were both replaced. along with fuel pumps. does this mean the ecm is bad. any thought on the subjuct would be greatly appreciated. thanks oh and i know my code reser is working because i hooked it up to my neighbors 91 and got a code immediatley.
i can't answer about the condition of your computer. But, I couldn't get the codes for my 88 f250 for a while because the connectors were all corroded. I had to scrape the metal contacts with a razor blade and use electrical contact cleaner to get anything to work.

If you are saying that you are not even getting an "11" and you can not do the self-test the computer is more than likely bad.
About the only other things it could be is wiring or the EEC Power relay is not feeding power to the computer.
right i'm not getting any codes. when i hook up the code reader i hear relays and stuff clicking. then nothing. i tryed the engine on test, and the idle and stuff changes. so the tests are apparently working. i should have set a code by unplugging the egr and iac right? thanks again

again, if you aren't getting ANY codes, not even a 11, then the connection between your code reader and the connector in the engine compartment is bad. Clean the terminals and try it again. You should get some kind of codes.
Also, you could try the lightbulb check (hoook up a 12v bulb instead of the code reader) and make sure you are getting something electrical from the connector.
ok thanks for the input guys. changed the computer and now the cel works and im getting codes. i got a code for the egr. would the egr cause the truck to stall out at idle and sometimes not want to start back up? when it stalls it makes a sucking sound.

Yes it will that would be the EGR valve sticking open. Try cleaning it.
Looks like I was right about the computer.
You might have shorted the diagnostics in the computer...
...I did that once.
There are two wires you can ground (forget which ones but could look it up) that will make the CEL come on to confirm that it actually works...I did that and it worked...so I knew the computer was fried.
