I was woundering what the value of a 1979 Ford 460 is worth. It was Overhauled. and shortly after it was (about 2 weeks after it was), it blew out the rear differential. (this engine was overhauled about 10 years ago and hasnt been run since., because the differential has crazy gear ratios)
This is in a '79 econoline, but a 460 is a 460.
I was mainly woundering because i traded a Ranger 4x4 w/Over drive **Transmission** for it. (traded a buick, and 2 trannys for the ranger transmission and some other goodies at the yard) Was that a good trade?

Reason: Meant Ranger Transmission
10 years is a long time without running, so the overhaul may not mean much by now.
If the motor runs really good, than probably not a bad trade. Hard to put a $ value on the motor. What kind of shape was the Ranger in? I guess I have seem many vehicles go for less than $400 with decent 460s in them.
In my opinion, you really cant' tell till you try and start it...before you try and start it i would, change the oil in it very first, because as time goes by (i.e. 10yrs not running) the oil will acually acidify. Then i would change the plugs and wires along with the coil and the cap and rotor, and last change the radiator fluid...its a good idea to at least try....i bought a 79 f 150 that sat for 7 yrs and i did all that, and it fired right up...it doesn't hurt to try.
depends alot on what part of the country it sat for 10 years in if it sat in arizona good chance it will be ok if it sat in seattle then the cylinders are rusted up
i live in wisconsin. but i did change the wires, and i am waiting on the oil change (i have all the supplies. ie: a oil drum, and the filter.) i did change the radiator fluid, wires and plugs. I broke one of the plugs (just the porcelin, it was a bad plug to begin with, crack in it.) he had it running the day he brought it over here in 98. but i will take the plugs out and try to turn the crank manually.
I was told to clean the carborator and stuff. and they said that the fuel lines might be plugged. i knew gas = bad after a long sit. i was goin to take the fuel pump out of the tank and set it in a bucket of gas. think i should clean the carb?

I would try to see if it runs first before doing anything to the carb, other than spraying it with some carb cleaner. More than likely I would think the carb should be rebuilt after sitting that long, but I would first see how it runs before doing that as you may have other issues to work out with an engine sitting for that long.
If you have an engine thats sat for ten years I hope it was baged! with about one pound of kitty litter in the bag. acid in the oil bad news and moisture from condensation not good, If you can roll it over you may still be ok,but I would pull the heads and clean up, lots of penetrating oil for the rings.JNT
yea, today i did an oil change, the oil wasnt as bad as i had expected. looked rather clean actually, some parts had small chunk like substances in it. When i had checked the oil, the dip stick had quite a bit of rust on it. Temporarily i have put 5w-30 in it. just to turn it over, maybe to start it a little. And because my 10w-30 drum ran out, and i didnt think it would be good using 15w-30. so I'm goin to get it running, Put that on stands, change the oil and then beef it out! Anyone know a good place that i can purchase Finned valve covers?
Update!
-Turned the crank manually (Was a 1 inch bolt btw) was hard then it was easy. So it works!
-Tried to start it. (i dis-connected the main gas line, re routed it to a gas can with 6 gals in it) turned over fairly easy but did not start (most likely a "jelly" like substance from the old gas or somthing). Put some good gas in the carburator to sort of "prime" it. Stayed running for about 4 seconds. My verdict: Carb is clogged
-Traded my tonneau cover (bought it for $50) for a holley double pumper carb!
