Ya the stick is so much better, the lights come on for both settings of 4x4 and it binds up on pavement, but i havent ever had the truck stuck and since ive owned it ive been in FL so no snow. would just locked hubs and front drive shaft cause it to bind up without the transfer case actually being engaged? I will try everything then head to the nearest mud hole to see if i can throw mud up the side of the truck, then i will know for sure its working or not. LOL
ps do you know where i could get a solenoid, if its bad? The transfer case one not the vac one. Thanks again
what do you mean bind up??? will the truck move?? i would try DirectFordParts for the part..they are a sponsor listed at the top of the page...wounder why no one is chiming in???
So now that i somehow got the 4x4 light off my dash, now when i turn the switch to 4x4H or L, nothing whatsoever happens, no locking of hubs or transfer case and no light on the dash. I ordered a new switch so well see if thats it, im about livid with this ordeal.
Ben, have your other half ( as long as you havent made her mad ) get in the truck and move the lever to 4 hi / 4 lo. Sit next to the truck and see if the driveshaft is turning, both with the hubs in manuel and with them in auto. That should tell you if your soleniod is bad on the transfer case. Also with her in the truck leave the hubs in auto and put the transfer case in neutral, see if you can spin the front shaft. Then lock on hub in and you should still be able to spin it until both hubs are manually locked in. Let me know what you find out. Call me if you want and I might be able to expain it better than typing.
Benny, I'll check my codes tomorrow to see if they match yours exactly. I think they do. Here is how I intentionally set the codes. I cut the power to the hub vac solenoid (front passenger fender well in engine compartment) and ran it to a switch inside the cab. With this setup I can go to 2wd low for backing trailer. If I want 4wd, I can flip the switch allowing vacuum to the hubs or manually lock hubs. I believe the computer is not seeing power to the vac solenoid and issuing the codes. As far as not getting the 4wd light to extinguish, I had the same problem and believe it was because the hub/s did not disengage when switched to 2wd. I got the light to go off by manually switching the hubs from lock to auto several times. Hope this helps.
Thanks guys, im going to check the relays tomorrow, do you know which relay is for the transfer case solenoid? Vac solenoid or are they on the load side of the same relay? Thx.
OK so today i replaced the switch and checked both fuses related to 4x4, flipflopped around every relay on the truck i could find, and checked for voltage at the shift actuator-motor. Nothing happening on the dash, no lights for 4x4 except the ones that cycle with the key and go out, turn the 4x switch nothing, and no voltage at the shift actuator-motor. Im at a huge loss here...Im thinkin the only thing left is "software" Im pretty sure the 4x4 is located in the GEM "jim" module, can it lock you/user out of 4x4 if it doesnt like some fashion of whats going on???
Have you checked the fuses? (i know dumb question)
When i had the problem with mine,it would go into 4x4,but only for about 5 mins (or until the vac canister was empty). But thats was your frist problem, now im not sure what the problem is.When my vac sileniod went bad,my transfer case shift motor went crazy, locking, unlocking, locking, unlocking like 6 times before it stopped trying to lock into 4x4.
This is what i would do,jack the front of the truck up(both wheels, put it on stands).Turn key on with out starting the truck, turn the 4x4 switch to 4x with the hubs on auto. Then wait 5 mins with it in 4x ,and leave your a/c selector on max with fan on high.
Then try to turn your drivers side tire and passenger tire while looking at the drive shaft every time,to make sure that your hubs are locking in.But wait at least 5 mins after you have turned the 4x4 switch.
Im not sure if the vac sileniod will stop the transfer case from engaging if its malfunctioning.
My logic is it shouldnt matter if the hubs are locked or not for the transfer case to engage? A couple weeks ago the 4x light would come on instantly when i turned the ESOF switch on. At this point i dont care if AUTO works or not i will lock them manually until i get that fixed if its even a problem. I mean NOTHIN happens when i throw the switch. Ive checked the hubs with the switch on now and they arent locking in auto. They used to when the switch was thrown. The vac leak i had has been fixed.
Benny, The codes you first reported are definitely related to the vac solenoid. I put power to my solenoid (with my switch mentioned earlier) and the codes went away. Turned switch off and codes came up again. I know for a fact that the truck will go to 4wd hi or lo without the front hubs locked in. I do it all the time. Keep in mind my truck is 2 yrs older than yours. I think I would start tracing power starting at the 4wd switch. Good luck.
