Voltmeter won't have any heavy current flow. Only an ampmeter needs to be sized for flow if you are not using a currrent transformer to reduce the current.

Any switched 12 volt circuit will work in conjunction with a good ground.

Only requirement would be ANY point in the electric system. Doesn't matter if it's switched or not (except for minor drain on battery if there's a lamp in the gage). All you are checking is the voltage, no amperage. Will read battery voltage if engine off, alternator voltage when engine running.

you could get current off the stator wire directly off the back of the alt it is green/red...easy to find as ford has been using this wire/color for 50+ years....i think i took all my switched 12v signals off my PTO high idle switch...as it isnt used and already there.

Engine running or not running? What is voltage at the battery? Running and not running.
