I was towing my trailer yesterday through some nice hilly areas and about 2 hours into my trip My OD light started flashing on the shifter, the truck still shifted fine and still dropped OD when I pushed the button, speedometer worked fine, I pulled over after About 20 minutes and shut the truck off and back on and it wasn't flashing anymore and didn't flash at all through the rest of the trip. Should I be concerned at all? what are some common reasons the light starts flashing.
I would change out the VSS sensor on top of the rearend.. they are only $10.49 and also change the rear end fluid.. read a post awhile back where the oil had metal debris and it was fouling up the sensor.. see: http://napaonline.com/MasterPages/NO...PartNum=530780
Napa calls them ABS sensors... or.... like Ron's says, maybe your temps got to high..Do you have trans temp gauge?

No I don't have a trans temp guage, just the stock one. I've travelled this very hilly area before when it was extremely hot and It never flashed or anything. And yesterday i did it in the evening and it was pretty cool. Probably about 55 degrees. trans fluid was changed about 2 months ago.
It's probably not the VSS in the diff, because this will also effect your Speedo readings. If it's the VSS you should have stored codes P0500, P0503, or P1500, according to my tranny shop manual which is for an early 99.
More likely, you were slipping the tranny under load, which will flash the OD light and set code 1728. I'd be concerned that this temporary flashing of the OD light might be a sign of that something's wrong.
It's all guessing without the code. The code will stay in memory for about a month after the last time the light flashed. Without the code nobody knows why the light flashed.
The places that can read codes free can't read transmission codes. You'll need to spend a few bucks to find out what code is stored.
