driving home from a friends tonight in my 1959 f100, and all the sudden I notice this knocking sound. there through all RPMs louder the higher the RPMs go.
turns out the #5 rod bearing is toast, messed up my crank journal a little to. Whats my best bet, buy a remanufactured crank, or see if I can have this one turned. I pl;an on getting a full engine gasket set and checking out the whole engine since as far into it I've ever been was to replace the timming chain. any thing I should pay close attention to? Also I have the option to buy a local 292 here for $100 it is supposed to run but need work. Sound worth the trouble of going to get it?
I personally prefer the 59 engine block, B9AE, and the 59 cylinder heads, -113. So, unless that engine being offered to you is another B9 with 113 heads, I wouldn't be in a hurry.
I think 292 cranks are not that hard to come by. If that were mine, I'd take the crank and rod to the machinist and see what he says. If he says the crank can't be salvaged, look for a replacement crank.
What do you know about the other 292? It might have some parts on it you would want. If the engine is a 56 or 57 292, it will have the high ratio rockers. That would be enough to justify buying the engine. If it's a 57 engine, it will probably have ECZ-G heads.
If it's a 60's engine, the only things it might have that you'd want are a steel crank and C1TE rods if it's from a heavy-duty truck, or EAN connecting rods otherwise, and the distributor.
well the $100 engine has a good crank and what looks to be a perfect block. I think I am going to take this one to the machine shop to be cleaned and check and rebuild the $100 one.
