Hi all. Just started noticing a slight clunking sound just as the tranny shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. It's an 05 psd 4X4 cc with auto trans. It does it only at 2-3 shift under hard or easy acceleration and in or out of tow/haul. Are there solenoids that shift these trannys?. I dont think its a u joint or the carrier bearing
The clunk you hear is normal. It's a one way clutch that engages on the 2-3 shift. They all do it to some extent, some are worse than others. There is no fix.
The clunk you are hearing from 2-3 is due to the Band/Clutch driven pack.. There is a band that spins prior to the clutch pack engaging, when the pack engages you get a whiplash clunk from the already spinning band and clutch pack connecting.. If your getting a clunk that is good.. Normally 2-3, customers experience slipping and feel it's a danger because in theory everyone believes slipping is no good.. Even so some slip too and thats due to the band..
You are ok, 2-3 is one of the most crucial gears when towing, that is why the 5R110 was designed with a band/clutch pack setup for that gear to ensure at all times the gear is easily engaged with/without load..
