I have a few areas that need attention on my truck. It is just surface rust, however it is getting rather bad... What sand paper should I get? I was going to sand it to bare metal, spray primer, etc.?
I don't mind alot of work, I have alot of free time at the moment, and I love working on the truck. The main areas of concern are the roof, driver-side door, and the hood.
I plan on painting it shortly.. I'm not going all out with it as my budget won't let me, I just want a decent paint job that won't bubble.
You definately need to bring it down to bare metal. You also need to look beyond just the rusted areas because if its rusting that bad to surface, its probably spread in areas you can't see yet. Sand/Media blasting would be your best bet, but if you don't have that as an option, go with the heaviest grit paper you can get with an/your sander. Once you begin to see metal, switch to an 80 grit (I prefer an orbital sander). After you get as good as you can with sanding, treat the metal with a rust inhibitor such as Ospho or Metal Ready.
When you make it this far, ask more questions. I found that too much info confuses me. Also, reading the "sticky'd" thread at the top of this forum answers a lot of questions.
I was hoping to be able to sand it by hand... Not an option?
I read the sticky'd thread, but it just confused me,lol. Too much info at once confuses me and I dont know where to start.
It looks like it was already sanded to metal, then primered, but never painted. There is just a thin coat over the metal.. Ill pick up some sand paper tomorrow, and sander if its a must. 80grit, and what else? Also, any brand preference on the rust inhibitor?
AHHHHHHHHH, well theres no turning back now! I ran to town, grabbed some 80 and 120 grit, and started sanding on the front-passenger panel. I am doing it by hand, so its rather tiring/time consuming.. but thats ok. The 80 grit cut through the paint, or primer.. what ever it was that was on it, like butter. When I got to the metal, it started making scores in the metal, and I have no experience with this sort of stuff, but I thought it wasn't good so I switched to 120. The 120 still scores it a little, but it is cleaning up well. Im sure some finer grit will smooth the metal up afterwards...?? I'm doing one panel at a time, and removing them all. I will then do the cab and bed with them still on the truck...I havn't decided on a color yet, but I was going to make a trip to town tomorrow for more supplies, and to choose a color. What brand should I look for? I can't afford anything expensive. I just want something that wont bubble, or flake REALLY easily. I will be shooting it with a cheapo Harbor Freight air gun. Also, what brand primer should I get? Do I have to mix anything into it?
That ended up being alot more to read then intended, so I will sum it up.
What brand paint should I look for?
Primer? Do I have to mix anything into it?
I'm in the same boat.
I haven't looked into the prices yet,but Im leaning twards that duplicolor paintshop line. Its a complete paint system. Its designed to work togother. It says there no mixin, and its ready to spray. You should check it out.I don't know if it will come out as shiny as others, but anything should be able to be buffed to a shine.
Well its sold by the quart like other paints.Im looking at the prices at summit right now.I like it because this will be my first paint job,and since its ready to use I will be able to consentrate on spraying the truck and not trying to mix paint with alll these chemicals.i just think it will be a better expirenece if I can enjoy it and mabye involve my little brother.ill post some prices in a second.
I would rather buy it from pepboys or another auto parts store, but this should give you an idea of what your looking at(product and price wise).I wish they had more colors.Im torn between the yellow and the black.
Wow, thats cheap! How many qts do you think it would take?
The previous owner started to paint mine yellow, but only got one fender and the grille done before I bought it. It looks good, I'm just not sure I am going to finish it that color.
I got a 1977 Ford 150 4x4
Mine aint as high as yours though. The previous owner(my uncle)towed a goosneck around the ranch so it only has a 4".I was going to go to a 6" lift, but Im into ridin horses so I tow a featherlite goosneck horse trailer so I gotta stay with the 4inch.
As far as the paint my uncle said he used like 3 or 4 gallons. The good thing about this paint is theres no recoat window.I'm goin to buy 2 quart from oriels at a time, but I am only doing this because I work next to orielies. So I can't honestly answer this one.
Ooooo, that much hu? Ouch.. I wasn't really wanting to spend that much, especially since I don't really know what I am doing and will probably mess it up..
Uh I think I might have overshot it.Yahoo ansers says like 3 quarts.Mabye my uncle meant quarts insted of gallons.Sorry for the scare.I'll ask my buddys dad how much it takes.Hes a painter.I'm going to use his shop, but I wanna paint it myself.i sure hope its quarts too.
When I sprayed mine the last time I painted everything that was green & didn't use 2 gallons of PPG enamel...Outside , with a quality paint should need maybe a gallon....
Black and decker have a electric dual action sander for about 26.00 bucks. It uses 5" pads and works like a charm. I got one at lowes and didn't expect to much out of it but it sanded my whole truck without any problems.
