I take all the garbage from the junk mail, and whatever else is lying on my table, and send it back to them in their pre-paid envelope. Because it is overweight, they have to pay for extra postage when they get it back... After a while, I stopped getting so much junk mail! I guess they got the message!!!
I have one even better I have been saving them and then add junk washers to them, but they just send more
About 20 years ago I was at the State Fair and signed up for a drawing to try and win a free bed. As a joke, I used the first name Marmaduke instead of my own. Only time I ever did that. To this day, I still get junk mail addressed to 'Marmaduke'!
I tend to get my mail late in the day, so when I drive anywhere in the evening, I stop by the mailbox and get it then. Junk mail tends to go on the dash and seat of my pickup and stay there... last time I checked, there was a bunch of stuff from the 2004 election still there, along with stuff from insurance companies wanting me to change my coverage to their company, credit card offers, stuff from the phone company wanting me to try their Internet service, car dealers advertising sales, implement dealers doing likewise, catalogs of every description, and I don't know what all. I quit looking about halfway through the pile.
If the stuff ever makes it into the house, it gets shredded and added to the compost pile.
Like many I get more junk mail everyday sent to my house than real mail. In my opinion, junk equals trash, and that's just where all that mail goes--in the trash (well, recycling box, really). Anyway, it seems to me I got this guy who calls himself the postman putting trash in my mailbox everyday. If he dumped his ashtray in my mailbox, I would take it out and put it in the trash, just like I do with most of the mail.
So maybe I should have the postman arrested for putting trash in my mailbox everyday. That might stop it!!!
My brother and three cousins work at the post office and if all I have to do is throw away a few letters a week thats just fine.Email really put a hurt to them so the junk mail saves at least a few jobs.
if it's e-mail, i respond with..."i'm sending this to the AttyGen of NY". that stops the email. if i get it through the PO, i send it back with the same quote on the front of the envelope.
it thins the junk mail herd.

Actually, that does nothing to stop it. Most emails are one time hit and runs. By responding, you are verifying that your email address is actually read and active, thereby getting on more email lists. You'll find many anti-spam sites who recommend replying as the last thing you want to do.
FYI, spammers aren't afraid of you reporting them to the Attorney General of New York. There are numerous anti-spam laws and if the spammers were concerned they wouldn't be spamming.
I'm not trying to sound like a grump about it, but I've dealt with blocking huge amounts of spam through FTE's servers over the years and you learn the ropes after a while. We literally block tens of thousands of spam emails each day and it gets worse each year.
i never reply to the sent spam Ken....i use my MSN email to threaten 'em. it has cut down on my crap mail. i do get enough "pharmacy...vi#4g%" adds to make me wonder if people know i've got issues.
i get a ton of ****** commercials.(my luck). i also get a ton of Manley type email..... show us your weapons!!!!!
just kidding all.
Not saying I disbelieve your experience by the reduction in spam is likely a coincidence or your ISP getting better at blocking spam. Just wasting your time threatening them. Trust me, they don't care and they aren't scared of the NY Attorney General. Matter of fact, 99% of the time they don't even retrieve replies because they are auto-deleted. Most are coming from off-shore and aren't the least bit concerned with US law, threats, replies, people's feelings about spam, etc. Seriously, do you think for one moment some guy from Malaysia hawking fake viagra over email is going to take 10 minutes to read your email and remove you from a list? He just sent out 40 million emails in 8 hours and probably had 100,000 replies. Why would he read yours?
Like I said, I'm not being a grump about it, but I've been combatting spam from a system admin perspective for 10 years and there's really nothing an end user can do to stop it unless they use filtering or their ISP does. FTE, as its own ISP, filters and blacklists emails.
