This has happened twice now, after starting my truck the glowplug light stays on. Each time it did it, I shut my truck off and then re-started and it would go out. My concern is if the plugs are still heating when this is happening I don't want to burn them up.
Also another thing just happened last night for the first time, when starting my truck, rolling the switch from run to start, all of my lights and my horn flashed or honked @ eight times in about 3 sec. time.??? It hasen't done it since.
How Long Did The Truck Run With The Lite On? I believe the glow plugs can stay on as long as 3 minutes depending on the temperature. Do You Have An Alarm System On Truck? I'de Start Bycleaning Battery Terminals, Make Sure Thier Not Loose Ect. Could be ign switch going bad, but I'de ck battery first.
The first time it happened I'm not sure, maybe a minute or two. When I first saw that it was on I waited @ 30 sec. to see if it would go out on it's own but it didn't so I pulled it to the side of the road, shut it off, waited a few seconds then started it again and it stayed of like normal. The second time it happened I shut it off right away and did a re-start and it stayed off. It hasn't done it for 3-4 days now but I thought I'd check to see if anyone else may have experienced a similar problem.
As far as my other weird problem, I've got clean terminals, no alarm system other than the panic button type on the key-remote. Actually that's kind of what it was like but very fast.
I think I read somewhere that the glowplug light is not actually tied to the glow plugs, but instead tied to a timer based on engine temp, barometric pressure and a bunch of other sensor readings.
I recently had some electrical gremlins where the glow plug light would stay on and the truck would not start. If the glow plug light went off she would fire up fine. The ford mechanic stated that the glowplug light staying on in my case was a sign of a short to ground.
Unfortunately I think you will need to talk to a Ford mechanic who has experience with our engines that can tell you what that means and where to look. I ended up paying $275 to repair a shorted wire, but it would have taken me forever to trace every wire in that truck to find the short.
Thanks, Mine starts fine so far, I hate these #*@! intermitent electrical problems. I hate to wait until it gets worse, with my luck I'll be out in the sticks somewhere when it quits and I'll have to call another PS get me out.
