I have a 1990 F-250 4X4 4spd with a 5.0l EFI, I was driving and it just died, almost like out of gas. I got to looking and had fuel all the way to the rail and can hear pump. SO then i checked spark, nothing, tried a coil, still, nothing. I have 12 volts all the up to the coil. So next I changed the Ignition Control Mod. or the (TFI). That did nothing, still no spark out of the coil, So next i was told to try to change the pick-up in the dizzy, I changed the whole dizzy instead, to make it easier and didnt mind payin a little more. Still nothin at all, its annoying I have been checking wires and have found nothing bad with any yet. I also hav checked plugins on the TFI and coil, both are good. I have also cranked it over and made sure the dizzy was all funtional, so not broken timing chain etc. The truck has a push button start in it for some reason(like that when i bought it), Before it died, i had the key turned foward to listen to the radio while working on my International Scout II, for almost 2 hrs it was in the on postion. I then finshed up on my scout and got in the truck started it and took off and made it maybe 15 ft before it died. Maybe i burnt somthin under the dash up because of the key being on so long.(just a wild guess after nothing esle seems to help) I m not to for sure where to go with it now any help is very much appricaited so pleazz respond back
Do you have power on the (-) TACH side of the coil also with the key on?
If no then take the plug off the coil and put 12V on the (+) POS side of the coil and see if it has it on the TACH side.
If yes then you have a bad coil plug or the COIL wire is shorted to ground.
If no then this Coil is bad.
Pull out the SPOUT jumper and see if you have spark.
If yes then you have a bad EEC Computer or the SPOUT wire is shorted to ground. Unplug the EEC Computer and put the SPOUT back in and see if you still have spark. If yes then the Computer is bad and if no the SPOUT wire is shorted to ground.
If no to pulling out the SPOUT jumper then check the continuity of all the primary ignition wires and make sure they are not shorted to each other.
Check the ignition ground pin at the TFI to see if it is well grounded.
The only ground for the ignition system is the two screws inside the distributor holding the PIP sensor down.
The above will only work if you have a good TFI module and PIP sensor.
Do all the voltage test with a test light and use an Ohmmeter to check continuity of the wires and shorts to ground and or to the other wires.
Let me know what ignition system you have and I will post you a diagram.
What color is the ICM (TIF) module? (Gray push start, Black CCD)
Do you have an open or closed distributor bowl? (TFI on the side is open and remote mounted is closed)
Ok, I got it fixed, Thank you subford. Like i said i checked the coil 1st, what i did was switch it with the one on my 1995 F-150 and still got the same, no fire, so i switched them back. So the coil was good THEN. But while i was swapping out the TFI and then the whole dizzy(only because I didnt want to mess with changing the pick-up and that roll pin) I guess i burnt up the coil somehow maybe from cranking on it so much and it just gettin power and nothing pushed out. I found this out by today messing with it before i went to work, i had the volt meter out(only because I couldnt find my test light) and i was getting good readings so i took Subfords advice, I just switched the coils again and this time fired right up. It is a little out of time only because i changed the whole dizzy and all i did was mark it on the block and inside the bowl. Its just out by a little thou, I ll fix it when i finish putting it back together all of the way tomorrw after work. I want to thank you Subford your advice helped me and is very much appricated.
