Big Diesel Leak

Well, I'm driving down I-20 in Dallas today and I decide to stop at a Flying J and filler up. Just as I am pulling up the exit ramp i notice that I have used alot of fuel fast. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me and pulled into the station where a guy waves me down and points under my truck. I get out and see fuel pouring down the back of the engine. After having my truck towed back home I proceed to isolate the leak under the fuel filter canister. With about an hour of work I pull off the little blue hose underneath and it's clearly cracked and busted. I've decided to replace all of the fuel hoses while I'm in there. Is there anything else I should be replacing while I have the canister off? The fuel pump was replaced 20K ago. Also, has anyone else drained half their tank in about 5 minutes? It seems a bit extreme to lose that much fuel from one hose so I thought I might ask if anyone has experienced anything like this. And, is running out of fuel bad for a PSD?

Nothing comes to mind of whatelse to change for fuel related items but that pump will dump alot of fuel through a split line, it uses fuel to cool the injectors. Running out of fuel is not a good thing, the injectors need the fuel to cushion the seats when the fuel is injected into the engine.

running out of fuel is bad for any engine especially diesels. that fuel lubricates it's part of the injector as well as burning in the holes. might pull the ipr and check the orings on it or just go ahead and replace them. cant think of anything else

Wow, quick replies. I ran out of fuel trying to get it to the shop at the flying J but I didn't push it hard at all. I coasted up to the shop with it off. I know the fuel cools the injectors, but would it hurt it for about 10 seconds? I really don't want to do any long term damage. I only have 139K miles.

If you ran out of fuel, pull the injector plugs on the valve cover and then crank, let sit for a bit and then crank, it'll halp to push some air out of the fuel passages in the head. I knowthey do something simular to this after an injector replacement/swap, but its mostly for purging air out of the oil passages. I can't believe it being overly difficult with purging fuel.

Also, prefill your fuel bowl............

The pump flows alot of fuel

I replaced all of the hoses and cleaned the fpr screen - it was completely clogged- and put it all back together. I started filling the bowl and the fuel spilled out the bottom of the canister. I found a hole in the metal at the bottom of the canister that I can't believe I missed the first time. I guess beacuse it was dark by the time I got it off and even then I didn't remove it completely from the truck. Now I have to replace the whole canister. Does anybody know a good place to get one of those? Also, a friend said he had a guy prime his PSD with transmission fluid. Anyone done this before?

I called Ford today and they said the fuel filter canister is $511!!!! That's insane. The piece is cast aluminum. If anyone can help me find a place to get one in Dallas for less I would greatly appreciate it.

I've never seen the fuel canister you are talking about, but can it be repaired?

There are several that pop up on Ebay but make sure it is the right year for your truck!

If you are going to pay the money the dealer wants I would spend some extra and get Bean's fuel supply and filters. IMO
