hey, back in October I had a P0401 code that i couldn't get to go away. I tried changing the EGR valve, cleaning the IAT2 sensor and cleaning out around the egr valve and vacuming it out. the code never went away but was not having any other problems with drivablity.
fast forward to today 9 months and 30,000 miles later. two weeks ago i was pulling a trailer and after leaving a red light and it started billowing black smoke and had very little accelaration. after speeding up a little it would take off like a bat out of hell and no black smoke. every time i stopped this happened. I checked the SGII and i had a P0401, P0404 and a P13?? I then changed the EGR valve and vaccumed out the carbon and all is good to go.
A week later and 1,000 miles and it starts doing this again. only P0401 and P0404 this time. the next morning after starting i got grey smoke and no power. after it warmed up for a second it took off and only did black smoke part of the time. I then took it to the local dealership and they said the new valve was blocked open with carbon so they warrentied the new valve and cleaned out again.
now 2 days later and when i take off i can see a small puff of black from the exaust and a P0401 is present. any thoughts on what to do? Thanks for all the help!
Are they replacing the Valve with new ? or cleaning it? I would have them replace with New , If you are cleaning try not to get anything in the little holes that gets to the Electrical , Does the valve have the rim/electrical gasket along with the lower O-rings? the DTC 0402 is exceeds valve limits wondering if they have the right one or just sprayed something in the Electrical making the thing stick.
I put a new EGR valve on 2 weeks ago and when i took it to the dealership a week later they said the new valve was stuck open from carbon and did a warrenty claim and put another new valve on. so 2 new egr valves in 2 weeks. and now less than a week later and around 500 miles I am getting black smoke again today. hope this clairifies it a little.
Do you have the OEM air filter , and last filter change? our trucks are air/ fuel Timing with Maf , oil/ fuel Injected, to soot up as bad as your Intake oil fuel carbon something is not breathing right or timed right, do you run Bio fuel aswell or have you ran B40 lately?
Now you got my Brain active, try cleaning up a few thing , the MAP follow the hose down to the Intake there is a brass nipple threaded take it out and clean it and the Intake hole , next is the IAT2 that will be sooted as well next EBP and tube soak the threads before you start wrenching on the tube some run weed eater line to clear the tube with out taking it off, just don't spray anything at the sensor make sure the hole is cleared out. USE Carb cleaner
and ware your safety Glasses that stuff burns like

i don't know what is considered "long idle" but I try to turn it off rather than let it idle. the longest it would sit is 10-15 min but that is maybe every 2 weeks to a month.
for about the last 2 weeks i've done WOT getting on the interstate about 2-3 times a day after it is up to temp to try to clean everything out.
my hearing is horrible from shooting for several years with no ear plugs so i cain't tell much on how the turbo sounds. is there any way to check the turbo other than sound?
The map and ebp are averages that I saw. The map would bounce around by about .5 and the ebp would bounce +- 1 on high idle
Here are some VGT Values at a Normal condition=
koeo-0
lo-73
hi-43
Have you looked at the map brass nipple in the intake?
same with the EBP and tube ?
your VGT values look low the rest are good
When was the last turbo cleaning? other things map, ebp, iat2, clogged airfilter, vgt sensor, lets get the map and ebp, iat2 looked at first, test. then turbo cleaning.

cleaned the MAP brass plug and the IAT2 sensor tonight. Didn't have time to pull the intake and get the EBP so I will try that tomorrow night. I will check the air filter tomorrow but i doubt its plugged as when it was smoking horribly after about 20mph it would take off and no smoke so at that point it was getting plenty of air.
also the turbo has never been off as far as I know but i got the truck at 77k.
would it hurt to do a VGT relearn or is that just a waist of time?
