Just ordered a SCT programmer for my 04 stroke with 96,000 miles and the engine build date is march 03. The tuner has the standard tunes, should I be worried about head gaskets or other mechanical failure? This is my first time using a programmer and I don't want to hurt anything. I also have a 4" turbo-back exhaust and aem cold air with gauges. Any info. will help, Thanks.
I know most custom tuners keep cylinder pressures within spec to avoid lifting the heads, however im not sure if this applies to canned tunes.Maybe Matt or someone else in the know will chime in.
what benefit to the mans question was making that statement of paying for playing? Didn't your mother tell you "if you don't have anything good to say don't say it at all!!" We come to this forum for advice on issues that we are concerned with, not to be reprimanded every time the word tuner arises.
Now to awnser your question, You should be fine with canned tunes, but to be absolutly sure I would reccomend you get a custom tuner to design a tune that meets your goals without pushing the truck harder than you desire. There are several tuners out there but few stand above the rest. Elite Diesel, Spartan Diesel, Innovative Diesel. These guys would gladly tune the SCT with some custom tunage that would make your heart pitter patter..
Thanks for the replies. I'm over the Diesel products for TCI Automotive. We are using my truck to test converters and transmissions for the 6.0 strokes. I've had the truck for a year now and just started doing mods to test our triple disc converter. The only problems I have had is injectors, other then that it's been a very strong truck. It's best et through the 1/8 is 9.02 @ 72 mph. Hope to improve with the triple disc and programmer. Just wanted a heads up on what parts could be hurt using a 100 hp 175 ft.lb. tune?

The basic answer to your question is lots of parts could be damaged. Tuning is a funny science, you can get power with many different combinations of boost, fuel and injection timing. The combination of these parameters has massive effect on cylinder pressures. Extremely high cylinder pressure is the downfall of the 6.0.
For the levels of performance you are asking I would strongly recommend gettign with a custom tuner and working out what you need. All the companies recommended by Reave1 are excellent and will be more than happy to get you what you need.
Long and the short of the story is I would recommend you ditch the canned tunes, save yourself some headaches, and have some tunes written by an expert on the 6.0.
A 400 RWHP tune can be made very reliable. We can set you up with anything you desire. I would recomend you shoot for something a little hotter than just a 400hp file if you are attempting to R&D a triple disk converter though. Alot of folks running SDT files are into the 400 RWHP mark so that may not be a true test of the power input most folks buying triple disk converters will be throwing at your parts. But we can write you a file as wild or mild as you desire. Give us a shout.
That's what I'm looking for. I want around or above the 400 rwhp range. In previous test using the 7.3, Cummins and Duramax converters our Triple Disc takes atleast 750-800 RW Ft/Lbs. to function properly. Otherwise it boggs the engine and makes the tranny run higher temps. I tested the single disc using the exhaust and cold air and had good results, however I still could have used more power testing it. This is my daily driver and don't want to blow gaskets or anything else and have it down for a long period of time, local dealer is slow as Christmas.
I'm running the Ultra Comp Street which is well over 400hp.. 40,000mi on the clock and no signs of puking.. Not like before... It's possible to pull +100hp on stock.. As long as it's programmed right.. Short of selling ourselves, Spartan has exceeded that theory over and over.. We're pretty good at what we do
If you want tunes to test your converters, give us a shout.. We can help build some tunes that'll really work up that Converter and let you know how it stands
My tuner will be here next week. I have got to take my truck to the dealer and get the flash code since it has changed like 5 times. Just e-mail me some contact info.(bradc@tciauto.com) if you don't mind and I can send you my code when I get it. Thanks!!
Good deal, I'll give you'll a shout when I get the tuner, thanks a lot for the help. You have really made this easy. I know a lot about power-trains, but still kinda green on the engines.

We feel your pain.. I have a dream of a non-juiced (can be if it needs to) 700hp Diesel.. Many of us are stumped on fighting the equipment to hold the power as terms of Transmission
For sure.. Matt, Evan or Myself will be glad to help yah
