I am currently running a stock 460 w/c6 in my 79' F250 2wd. I have the opportunity to buy a 72' 360 w/ allison tranny and do a swap or keep the 460 and upgrade timing chain and intake/carb. This is a daily driver, but I commute 2mi, and maybe do 150 mi a week. I also will be towing a 20ft aluminum Thule trailer hauling classic gas around (7-8k gvw). I used to pull with a 05' Dodge 3500 dually Hemi, and find that the F250 gets the same if not better gas mileage. I also have developed a herniated disc after switching to the Dodge, and miraculously after going back to my Ford the back pains have gone away. (maybe its from not stretching for my wallet to make payments anymore..) Plus emotionally I am happier driving my old friend again.
I also want some advice on a great general purpose tire, one that would perform great as a highway/ towing tire. I am going to move to 16" rims, and take off the 16.5" Kumho MT's.
Well i would just stick with what you have now. reason being there was never an allison transmisson bolted to a ford engine. The trans behind the 360 is going to be a c-6.
You'd do best to keep the 460/C6, unless you lived near me, in which case you'd be better off swapping in a 360...
I'd even do the swap labor for you if I got to add the 460/C6 to my collection.
