hello everyone,
just joined today, this is my first post.
my first question is.....does the door tag have a code that tells the ratio of the rearend? the tag is gone off the chunk on my 76', so i was hoping the door code could help me.
You will need rear end tag or the sticker on the door jamb. If none of these are present you can request a build sheet from ford which will give all the factory build specs for you VIN.
We can narrow it down if you give us as many details as possible...
The tag being gone means someone has been in there more than likely.
If you want to know your gear ratio you can check it by
marking the driveshaft at the ujoint and third member
then jack up one side of truck and mark the tire (i use the tire valvestem at 6 0clock position)
turn the tire 2 revolutions and count how many times the mark on the ujoint goes past the mark on the dif.
this will be your gear ratio 3 and half turns will be 3.50, 3turns 3.00 and ect.
i was needing to know how to check for a locking rearend on a junker in a salvage yard. is it on the door code, or can i tell by rotating one of the tires?

You could try jacking up the back end and spinning a tire, if the other tire spins the same way you have a locker, if it spins the opposite way or doesn't move it's an open diff. This provided nothings worn out inside Regards and Welcome
but if one tire is still on the ground so it can't turn, wouldn't the tire that's up in the air still turn even if it is locking, because aren't locking rearends actually "limited slip?" I've been told in the past that with limited slip, one tire makes 1 1/2 revolutions before the other tire starts turning. correct?

My mistake in my 1st post I should of said limited slip not locker. A "limited slip" or "posi" is just that, clutches activate within the pumpkin. They are activated due to each tire turning at a different ratio or speed, A "locked" axle doesn't care, they (tires) turn at the same speed all the time by having a set of locking teeth in the pumpkin. Our trucks never came off. the line with lockers only limited slip.to tell if a rear end has it due what I said in the 1st post.To tell if it has a locker (non-factory) ya gotta open the pumpkin and look for the locker

so if i get both rear wheels off the ground and spin one forward and the other wheel also turns forward, then it's limited slip, right? And if the other wheel turns backwards, then it's open, right?
[QUOTE=Mil1ion]The easy way is to do a burn out. If both wheels leave a rubber mark tou have
LS or Traction lock
"Posi" is a GM term.
okay hate to break it to you man but i got no LS the axle code is 19 on my 1993 i have done a burnout like stepped on it and on pavement its lets 2 wheel marks what gives? iam 100% sure its stock cause in winter one wheel would spin
