Will a 390 out of a '72 f100 2wd shortbox will bolt up to my 78 f150 2wd longbox?
found a parts truck with a mild built 390 (bored .030, headers and intake). Just want to know if it will bolt up to my existing tranny and any other modifying i might need to do.
it also has a fairly straight box on it if anyone is interested.
Impossible to say without knowing what's in your truck.
I will make a few statements that might help.
1. FE engines (390, 360, 428 etc) were not offered in pickups after 1976.
2. FE engines have a unique bellhousing pattern, so odds are it will not bolt up. Unless someone previous swapped in an FE.
3. Since FE's weren't offered in 78, it would be emissions illegal to swap one in. If you have smog check where you are, be aware you might not pass. (depends on if the smog monkey knows what he's looking at.)
It all depends what tranny you have. I had a 360 that I was going to swap into my 78 F250, but it has the C6 auto with the married NP203. not a problem if you have a big budget, but mine was just to get it together and nothing more. If you have a manual, then you could swap bell housings, but i do not know if the motor mounts would fit up, or anything like that. You might be better off going with a 429/460, not that there is anything wrong with a 390! Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest FE fans out there, but a 460 would be cheaper to swap because of the same bell housing pattern as the M block.
Just my $.02
