Hi, guys I have a question regarding freeze plug installation. I have a 91'
Explorer 4.0 OL and I'm 95% sure it's leaking coolant from the freeze plug at the back of the engine on the drivers side. Can't see it but it's leaking above the transmision, directly on the starter motor. My question is can these be changed out with only dropping the trans out, and access it from underneath or does the motor have to be pulled. Thanks for any info.
You don't have to pull the engine but it is a MAJOR pita! I did all six on my '93 and to get to the one that you are talking about I had to tear out the steering column, exhaust manifold, inside fender well and front wheel. Even after all that I still couldn't get enough room to swing a hammer so I used a two foot wooden dowel and hammer to drive them in. Takes a little practice and a lot of patience but it can be done. I'm not sure if trying to hit them from under the vehicle is any easier but it's worth a try I guess. Just make sure that you put RTV sealant around the plug beforehand in order to get a good seal. Good luck!
