Here is a link to the 1989 E-series Engine Plugs, F series may be the same.
Have no information on the 1990.

i think that on the 1990 harness, the oil and temp wires are in the brown plug, not the grey. and i think that because the ECT sensor is not working, its causing the truck to run a little rough at cold start

I did the 1989 side now you can post the 1990 side.
You will need a Ford wiring diagram for the 1990 F-series.
You can get one from HELM or ebay.

on the 1990 side, the coolant temp and oil pressure wire go to the brown plug which is the second plug from the front of the vehicle. you think i can change the wires over? question is, what do the wires that are in that location now go to???

For many years including your year, Ford used a red/white wire for the temp and white/red for the oil guage.

Did you not get a Ford 1990 Wiring Diagram?
At the bottom of each fold out there is a diagram of each plugs pin out, this is what you need, a photo will not do you any good.

If you scan the plugs an email them to me I will try and draw a matching pin out like the one I linked to above.

If you can not scan it or read the diagram you can mail the 1989 & 1990 diagrams to me and I will draw up something for you and then return the wiring diagrams to you if you want.
With out looking back it was a 1989 & 1990 was it not.

this is what i did...
my truck is a 1990 and the motor i put in was from a 1989 and the harness that was on the motor that i put in was a 1989. the 1989 engine harness and the 1990 chassis harness did not match. the truck ran, but the coolant temp and oil gauge did not work and i believe some of the other sensors also did not work. i traced the wires and found that some did not go to the same pins as the 1990 harness. i just pulled the 1989 harness off, and am putting the 1990 harness on from my 351 since that harness matches the chassis harness. the only thing my 1990 351 harness doesnt have is the plug for the knock sensor since the 351 didnt have one. so i cut open the 1989 302 harness and took the knock sensor wires with plug out and put it into my 1990 351 harness. i just need to know which one of the 4 plugs on the fender the knock sensor wire needs to go in. i think it is the white plug. on my 1990 351 harness, i have 2 empty spots on the wire plug with caps on it. that has to be where the knock sensor wire goes because i think that they used the same harness for the 302/351.

I think you are doing the right thing, but if you are using the 1990 computer, then it's not going to be programmed for the knock sensor, so there is no use hooking it up correct?

I would use the 1990 harness like you are planning, and I would make sure all the sensors on the 89 engine are the same as the 1990. If any are not, then take the same sensor off the 1990 engine and put it on the 89 engine. That way the computer knows no difference, and the only thing you will be really changing is the cast iron underneath all the sensors.

Does that computer use a knock sensor? Will the 1990 wiring harness work with the 1991 computer? That's questions you need to answer. What are you doing, changing from a manual to an auto tranny? If you are, there are lots of wires going to the e4od tranny that you might not have.
