The fuel pump (on drivers side) has been constantly running for a few weeks now. All of a sudden, I went from 75 on the freeway to 30 in just a few seconds (it wasn't pretty). Shut the truck off, then on, and it ran again. I assumed it was the fuel pump that had been screaming for the last few weeks - so I replaced it. NOT the fuel pump. I thought maybe it was the pressure regulator - and a mechanic said it was probably the fuel tank. I transfer out of a slip tank and he thought it was algae build up and he said it ate through the plastic lining of my tank?! ($825 for a new tank). Before I install it, I removed the current tank - cleaned it out - just a little water. Re-installed the old tank - it's a little quieter, but the fuel pump is still running constantly. Has ANYONE had any problems like this?! Thanks
It actually runs so loud, you can hear it while driving down the highway. I blew out all of the fuel lines, replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, sending unit, and cleaned the tank.
Well now I am stumped. You shouldn't be able to hear it while driving down the road. You shouldn't even be able to hear it while idling. What does it sound like and how do you know it is the pump? Did you put the rubber sleeve on the replacement? What brand replacement pump did you get?
I replaced the pump with a Napa fuel pump with the rubber sleeve. When we talked to the Ford mechanic, he said the inside liner of the fuel tank could've separated and pushed up against the bottom of the sending unit which would cause it to struggle to pull fuel. When I took it apart the liner had not separated. I know it's the fuel pump that's making the noise (just get close, and there's NO mistaking it). Why is the question. I'm thinking maybe the tank has become deformed in some way and is pushing down on the sending unit - I am going to try to shim the tank!?
So that has nothing to do with the actual truck tank which should be plastic unless you have something else. What is the truck and how many miles on it?
I believe your issue resides inside your truck's fuel tank. The screen or pickup is more than likely crudded up. Might even try driving without the fuel cap screwed on tight to see if the pump performs better. Bottom line, if you're hearing that pump like that, it probably won't last long. Make sure the filter bowl filter is clean. When was the last time that was changed and what did it look like in there?
I don't want you to think I'm ignoring you - I'm heading to bed - have to get up in 4 hours and hope my truck makes it to work. Thanks for your help/input. If you can think of anything else, I would love to hear about it.
