Make sure you use the right grade of oil not 15w40 or something like that!!Also some of the after market filters for fords are not the ant-drain back filters like ford uses, I have only seen one after market filter the fram double guard filter that was with the anti-drain back valve in them their regular filters do not have it. This will really hurt your engine without it just something to think about..!!!
My 2000 5.4 superduty suffers from the same piston slap when cold. I bought it used with 68000 on it it scares me I make sure its warm before i work it. I now have 129,000 doesn't use oil sill running.
Yes, they actually added threads to the head for the 03 2V heads, but the 04-up heads use a totally different plug and have many more threads in the head.
I have a 98 f250 with a 5.4, and I have the same problem. Took to a ford specialist, and he told me that I have a cracked exhaust manifold. When it first starts up it raps, but after it warms up it stops. In order to fix it I need to get the rusted manifold bolts without snapping them off.
Well at 245,000 miles mine is still knocking for the first minute or so but always goes away. Guess I'll just have to live with it till 500,000 miles
BTW I use Castrol GTX 10W40
I have a 2005 Expedition with the 3V 5.4L motor in it. And I am here checking out why my motor has a cold start knock. LOL. $20,000 miles on it. It appears the 3V motor is not immune.
I'm thinking they only changed the heads and not the lower end. If it were me I'd have them throw in a new crate motor. The knocking may only happen to the original ones. If they won't do that you may be better off leaving your present motor alone instead of having them experiment on yours searching for the cause of the knock. It is basically the design of the piston that is causing the knock. Once the oil pressure comes up it always goes away for me. Good luck with the stealership and keep us updated with your situation.
P.S Have them document the noise and then you'll have paperwork on it if it ever gets worse.
My issue was more of a cold start ticking that settled down after the engine warmed up - 2001 SupCrew with 96K. Turned out to be 4 broken exhaust manifold bolts (4of8) on the left side. Now a thrilled owner of a 2006 SupCrew 4WD Long Box. The 3V 5.4 is a great driving motor!
My engine has developed a hard knock over the last 20K miles to the point people turn to watch you go by. Noise seems to come from right front of engine. It doesn't use any oil and has same power as before am thinking about replacing timing chains to see if this helps. Engine doesn't shake and noise will go away at about 1500 RPMs. Will this help? PS engine has 350.000 mile on it. Thanks ED
