Help With Trailer Backing

Hooked up my boat, everything was great. Backed into gas station normally. I came home and once I went to back it into my driveway, the electric trailer brake would not release in REVERSE. I had to release them manually. I have not looked at it yet. Any ideas if a blown fuse would have anything to do with it? Any idea which one. 2004 PSD

The brakes should only be applied when your truck puts voltage to that terminal. There are two other conditions depending on your trailer, surge brakes have to be overridden by the reverse lights and the brake away system can activate and hold the trailer brakes.

Make sure your trailer wiring is right. I have heard of people installing the brake wire as the center pin where the reverse wire is supposed to go. Here is a good diagram showing where the wires should go.

Check the by pass valve on the trailer as well. It should be behind the actuator if you have a UFP A-60. Looks like a brass tube about 2 inches long with a blue wire attatched to it.

Check the electrical connection, very common for them to corrode out.

Look here:

I have the same problem. I was just going to ask for the same thing.

The wiring is correct. NEWER Trailer. It's just funny I have problems all of a sudden. I have to check power supplies. Any other suggestions? Is there a fuse that powers the reverse circuit?

Could be a corroded ground wire somwhere as the power has to bleed somewhere so it will "feed back" through the least path of resistance. During the time being pulled the coupler will wear a shiny spot at the front where it is rubbing against the ball hitch. This equals a good ground. When you back up, your putting the ball against the back of the coupler where it is rusty, no ground. The "slop" is so slight, you might not notice. it only takes a fraction to loses that ground at the ball.

you think grease would interfere with this ground. Never had a problem before.

It's possible, but you have a ground in the plug as well that should take over if you loose the ball ground.

The bigger problem I run into is bad ground wires on the trailer. Where the ground comes off the plug and attaches to the trailer frame. Most of the trailers I have to work on have a single self tapping screw and a star washer. A little moisture gets under it and you no longer have a good ground on the trailer.

Yes. It just happened all of a sudden. Coincidentally, how do you check if the "maxi" fuses are good? They don't have test prongs like the mini fuses.

My reverse lights are not working. The dealer just did head gaskets on my truck( from what they told me the entire cab comes off for ease of installation). I wonder if they left something unplugged. I did a visual on the fuses and they are good. DAM***. What now? That is the obvious problem since the reverse light power the center of the 7 pin plug. Now I am pissed. I had to spend hours fixing stuff the P.O.S. dealer mechanic left half-****d. Any suggestions?????

Most of the big maxi fuses I have seen are testable just like the ATC and mini right from the top.

I'd look at the column and transmission since it only affects the reverse lights. It must be something near a gear selector.

I checked my buddy's F250 it has power in the same spot @ the trans switch with the engine running and in reverse. I also checked the trailer plug...here's where the difference is. On my truck the two spades on the left are energized in neutral and in reverse. On his truck only one left spade is energized when in neutral and the same spade and the "center" is energized. makes no sense. Any ideas?
