A/C question

My 87 5.0 Bronco's A/C isnt cold anymore but its not blowing warm either. It has been converted to 134A, So i bought a kit at the parts store to recharge it. When I hooked up the gauge and it reads ok, but I noticed that the compressor clicks on and off every 10-15 seconds. It wont stay on for more than a few seconds and shuts off again. Also the engine boggs down when ever the compressor clicks on. Anyone know of a good place to start?

Cycling of the compressor is usually caused by a low refrigerant charge. The first place to start is to beg, borrow, steal a proper manifold gauge set and, vacuum pump. You are working blind if you cannot monitor both the low and high side pressures. You can often rent these tools at AutoZone, Checkers, Advance, etc.
You then need to locate the leak and repair it (leaks only get bigger), pull a deep vacuum on the system, add a small amount of oil to replace what's been lost, then charge the system with virgin R134a (no sealers, boosters, etc.) One can of R134a with UV dye is a good idea.

The low side gauge on that "kit" is notoriously inaccurate and only one notch above useless. The "kit" also probably contains "boosters" or "sealers" that are equally as worthless and totally unneeded in your system. The vast majority of stuff on that rack at the parts store is either junk or snake oil, meant to perform a wallet flush on folks that don't know much about AC systems. You can go ahead and add the contents to your system, but don't be disappointed if the results arent what you expect or if the system quits again soon.

Try putting in a little refrigerant to start, its easy with kits from advance etc..Get a thermometer to monitor your ac (vents) and see if it gets any colder . Its a start , i ended up having to redo all my ac hoses compressor etc on my 1985 f-150 cause of leaks (adding refrigerant often.I am not an ac person but found it easy with purchases from advance (book included)LMC TR
