Drivetrain whine

2003 King Ranch Supercrew 4x2, 5.4 L with 73K miles, completely stock. I just bought this truck a month or so ago and have noticed a slight whine in the drivetrain during normal driving when the engine is under a slight load as in climbing a hill in top gear or accelerating. When coasting, the noise goes away.

Is this a normal noise, or something I should check in to? It isn't loud, just loud enough to hear without the radio on. The faster the truck goes the higher the frequency of the whine. Any opinions?

I would pull the rear differential cover and check the condition of the fluid, gears, and bearings. Check for large metal flakes/chunks laying in the bottom. With 73K on it, it's a good idea to change the fluid anyways...

Ive had a simular problem with my expy. took the dealership 4 trys to properly align the gears to stop the whining. the ring and pinion was mis-aligned. i think im on the 4th set on ring an pinion gears. so go ahead and check the fluid and if u get a lot of metalic flakes coming out i hope ur still under warranty
