Josh, My F-250 came with a Hercules bumper when I bought it. It was the best bumper I've seen on a F-series truck. I lost mine and could'nt replace it when somebody smacked me from behind. Never have been able to replace it. I'm lookin though.
I have over 100 hours into this bumper mostly because I built it all with hand tools. My reserve is only $500. Seems like a lot, but like you said, large vendors sell theirs for twice that much and they use "computer cut" parts whichs REALLY cuts the time and effort down, and there is abosutely nothing wrong with it, but its kind of like putting a jiqsaw puzzle together. I built the bumper starting from carboard templates and some long designing. That said, it will be really hard on my half to compete and come out with a little cash in my pocket. I am going to school for Computer Integrated Machining and I really like the fabrication I have played around with so far. I made this bumper to sell so I can pay off for tools for the class. If i find enough interest, hopefully I can get some orders and do this work on the side of my other job.
As much as I would like to sell for cheap, supplies and materials arent cheap and have to find a way to keep going with it. I understand you look at the bumpers for that amount and can't bring yourself to find how its worth that much. In fact, thats why I made my first bumper. No way a high school kid could afford one while paying for other things. My first bumper is somewhat similar to this one, only a little taller on the sides. I went off the look of www.broncoair.com bumpers for the 92-96 models. It ended up costing me about $300 in the end. If you look at his bumpers, they are very well built. $800 is the rate for just the bumper. Then you get into the inset lights and grille gaurd it adds up. It would be nice for him to do the 92-96 and me for the 87-91's!
Skandocious, I would be willing to make you a bumper. I'll have to find a 92-96 truck around town to get the curvature of the body and the mounting system. PM me and maybe we could throw out some numbers
Honestly, I personally don't like the look for Pre runner type bumpers without any boxing in, although there is a lot of interest in them. I would like to buy a tube bender in the future and make those also.
