How can this happen? I have the worst luck. Looks like it just came unscrewed.

If you had it off recently, it wasn't tight enough. It will come unscrewed when the engine is shut down, or if it backfires (highly unlikely).

The fan clutch threads on our diesel engines are "RIGHT HAND THREAD". Gasser's are left hand thread.

This is copied from my Ford Service Manual:

Removal

1. Partially drain the engine cooling system.

2. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260).

3. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hose at radiator.

4. CAUTION: Right-hand thread. Remove by turning nut counterclockwise.

Remove the fan clutch (8A616) using Fan Clutch Nut Wrench T83T-6312-B and Fan Clutch Pulley Holder T94T-6312-AH, set fan clutch in fan shroud (8146).

Yes, but good luck getting a set that fits. 1 7/8 IIRC for the fan nut, or a pipe wrench/big cresent wrench ect. I use a strap wrench to hold the pulley. You can try to jamb a screwdriver across the bolts that hold the pulley, watch your knuckles

Hard for me to imagine one coming unscrewed, usually the tough part with the wrenches is breaking the clutch loose from the pump. The rotation of the water pump and drag of the fan should result in the clutch threads being self tightening.

I thought the same thing, I wonder if the clutch was froze up would it unscrew when the engine was shut down? It had to be loose or the engine came to a sudden stop.

I put blue locktite on in and borrowed a tool from autozone. Hopefully that'll hold it.

Wink ?

Mine is a diesel and it was left hand threaded. I have the tools for removing the fan and installing, and I dont need them any more, but it would take a week for them to get to you by mail. Once you have the tools its simple to tighten or loosen. I dont need them cause I went electric. Let me know if I can help. Honestly with out the special tools I dont think I would have ever got mine off. It was tight. You will probebly be okay driving for awhile with out it. I did for a few months and I have heard others doing it for a lot longer. Just dont get stuck in too much traffic. Good luck and just PM your address if you want to get those tools from me.

What size electric did you use? Did you mount in front or behind the rad?
