You need to go to the 351 engine forum and do a search on replacing the rear seal. You will probably find 50 or more posts on this subject with very helpful suggestions.
Either engine or trans need to be moved back to access the rear main seal.
Oil pan must go, and bearing caps are loosened enough to allow installation of new seal. Of course, one must follow re-torque specs. You should find the procedure in a Chilton or Haynes manual. I think most transmission shops can accomodate you, but it is always good to ask first. If they won't do it, maybe go somewhere else for trans work that will.
How did he get around the flexplate/ flywheel problem? The torque converter or clutch would also be in the way...
On older engines the seal is in the rear main bearing cap (2-piece), so the flywheel etc. are not in the way. Newer engines, it is a one-piece seal that goes at the end of the crankshaft I believe (behind flywheel or flex palte).
I believe 351m/400 are the same seal. All you need to do is drop the pan and #5 bearing. Use a soft wire or pipe cleaner to push the old seal out of the top. I've changed rear main and main bearings this way on my 400 without a problem.
