I recently bought a '74 F100 with the I6 motor I was told that it was a 300, but the vin code says it was a 240 truck. The motor was replaced in 2000. How do I tell what motor I have? anybody have any ideas?
Check the stroke.
take out a spark plug and make sure the piston is at top dead center, then take a small dowell rod put on top of piston find a common reference point and mark the dowell rod, then with a socket turn engine untill piston is all the way to the bottom then put the dowell rod back in and mark it, then measure between the two marks.
240 is 3.18 inch stroke (about 3 inches when measuring with tape measure)
300 is 3.98 inch stroke (about 4 inches)
