Yet another question...
I'm working on rebuilding my 400M. I intend to shave the heads .025" Obviously I will have to make an adjustment somewhere else in the valve train to compensate for the shaved material. Have any of you done this, and if so, where did you remove the material from?
I read in an article about a build-up on this motor, that it can be removed from the top of the valve stems. My machine shop is hesitant to do it, saying that the new stainless valves may only be "case hardened" not hardened through. They suggest finishing all the machine work on the heads, and block deck first, then add the two amounts of material removed and subtract it from the stock pushrod lenght, and order shorter pushrods of that size. Has anyone done this before? any thoughts? Thanks again in advance!!!
I agree that shorter pushrods will be the best way to go.You will need at least one adjustable one to determine the length mostly just to be sure, allthough subtracting the material removed will do in a hurry. The main thing is that the plunger in the hyd. lifter be depressed {pre-load} a certain amount{find this out}when the rocker is tightened down.If the machine shop is to assemble the engine fully, they would have to perform this check anyway. They will usually measure all the cylinders and obtain an average reading, then order a set of pushrods accordingly.I seem to remember Perfect Circle{NAPA} offered shorter pushrods!
