well when i go on vacation the dealership is doing some warranty work to my truck...stupid things like replacing the air filter box because that little foam seal is dry rotting and my rear bumber is rusting and they are going to have it fixed...but i am also getting a slight cluck under my feet on the driver side...i had my friend at sears auto take a look at the front end and he said that ball joints and everything is good and tight...now what else could it be i read on here some time ago that it could be something like a cab mount? i just want to make sure they can find it before i put my lift on when i get back from vacation and the warranty is voided
Check the two rubber bushings in the center of the front sway bar.(U-Shaped Rubber Bushings) My dads truck had a similar noise and these two rubbers were sloppy.
well i took it to sears and he took it for a test drive (good friend of the family) and he said the only thing he hears is a truck riding like a truck...well he put it up on the rack aand checked everthing up front...well its going into the dealer any ways but i just wanted to see if it was something i could locate before it went in...they said that they will try to find it...i dont hear it as much as i feel it...and it comes and goes but more so over larger bumps...no clunk while accelerating or stopping...maybe it just is the sound of my truck being a truck.. hopefully it gets louder before i go in..
Replace the sway bar end links. I had the same clunking under my feet on my 03 F250 4X4 SD 6.0 and it drove me mad try to find what was loose. Went to NAPA and bought new link ends and was good to go!
I'm guessing if his buddy checked out the front end he would have checked the sway bar links and shocks. I am guessing it is the cab mount. It came loose in my 99, and was driving me nuts. My dad kept giving me the "rides like a truck" line too, but I knew that it was something that had just started happening. I ended up taking the truck to the dealer for something else, mentioned the thump and they found the loose cab bolt and tightened it up. It was doing pretty much just what counter is describing, a barely audible sound, but you could really feel it in your feet on the drivers side when going over a bump (it was the drivers side cab mount).
You don't go under the truck, you go under the carpet. Very carefully lift up the plastic rocker panel molding and pull it out from its retaining clips. Then, sneak the carpet out from underneath the kick panel trim and the accelerator and brake pedal. Pull it all the way back toward the drivers seat. You will see a large elongated rubber plug (like 2"x3"). Use a screwdriver to pop the plug out and beneath it you will find the forward cab mount. Directions are same for passenger side. Reassembly is the reverse of removal.
Seriously, it is really not that difficult. The plastic trim just pops out, no fastners like the old days where you had to fight with phillips head screws that are half rusted. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes per side and the dealer will charge what $50-75?
