"93 F150 302 Auto, 4X4. I went to put the truck in reverse & something popped. The ship lever went limp & you could flop it around between N & P. I turned it off but it would not go to lock (couldn't get the key out). Applied a little pressure towards P & got it to lock. It seems it is broken right at the column because nothing moves underneath. I'll have to pull the ignition switch to get the trim pieces off. What can I expect under there? Any help will be appreciated.
there are 2 U shaped brackets that are held down with2 bolts
1 on each side
these are notorius for breaking
they hold the shifter shaft in place
you will need to lower the column by unbolting from under
the dash to get to the 2nd clamp
pick up new ones with the plastic bushings that go under them at ford
It can be done with cover on and not remove key but is easier. You may have to order one. I take a piece of flat steel and bolt to cable mount under dash so shift and I can drive. I had to order last one and local wreckers wont part good columns. Remove screw in covers ,remove 2 nut/bolts bottom dash and the column will drop to set and can work on it easy . That way you can see what you need .
Try local wreckers or a parts truck cheapest . to parts that go bad are the shift tube round hollow metal tube.and shift plunger goes inside it. LMC has them for $25 tube and $ 12 plunger. So you should be able to find them around there price wise locally . And no shipping. Good luck
Thanks. I dropped the column & the selector control tube had broken in half. The clamps were still good, but I'll probably replace them as well. So I'll have to find the parts.
